Skirts as Dresses

I've seen other bloggers, usually those on self-imposed shopping quarantine, try this trick.  It looks better I think with the black maxi than with the mustard midi, but either one might work if you added the right accessories.  The belt loops on the skirt at left bug me though.

What do you guys think?  Could I get away with this in the classroom?  And what would you add to complete the look?

  1. I always see this on other bloggers and am never convinced when I do it myself. And the belt loops would drive me nuts. Having said that, I do think the black one looks good (I like the yellow too, especially with the grey, but the belt loops...) I think it could certainly be done in the classroom. I might add a cardigan...

  2. Emily--a cardigan would solve the belt loop problem wouldn't it.

  3. I think they both look great! I would just remove the belt loops...even when you wear it as a skirt, you don't necessarilly need them. I'd add a pair of boots to keep the long line. Maybe a scarf or something interesting at the neck. You could soooooo get away with this in the classroom! You're intelligent AND creative! I love this! ~Serene

  4. I actually kinda like the mustard one more. I tried doing the same thing too with my chiffon maxi skirt..didn't really look nice hehe. but yours looks lovely! <3 and you could possibly get away with it in the classroom, but hm maybe a blazer or cardigan over it ? :).

  5. I love the skirt as a dress idea. I think Christina (secondSkin) was the first to really open my eyes to it. And by wearing them as such, you have essentially just given yourself a bunch of new dresses!

I think this should go over quite well in the classroom. And I think I would feel weird myself wearing the belt loops like that (I've tried, but it hasn't made it out of the house yet)-- but I think it actually looks really cool and funky. I would say go for it if you're comfortable, because it really does look nice. And the black one hits your leg at the perfect length! I am wishing to find a skirt/dress in that exact length.

You remind me of Alice in Wonderland in that photo. I love the patent flats.

  6. Serene--don't tempt me with the boot idea. I'm resisting mightily the urge to buy expensive boots.

KathleenCarla--you're so tiny that a skirt as a dress would swamp you.

Haiku--I may have to try the black one and see if any student notices. I'm at a point in my semester where they've begun to tune me out and my visibility must be wavering.

  7. You look great. I think it is definitely class-room appropriate :)
As far as the senior discount goes, I would love to have an extra 10% off ;). It was the shock of me being 46 that hit me. I just can't believe I'm that age. Isn't it funny? When I was a girl, I thought 40 was one foot on the grave! My hubs and I always talk about how we still FEEL in our 20's (mentally, that is ;)
I am not growing old gracefully, and that makes me feel so petty. Oh well........... :)
My Mom says when I hit 76, I'll look back and laugh !

  8. This is really interesting! It looks good on you!
I would agree with the previous comments and go with some knee-high boots, which would make for a "cool" look. And the cardigan is a good idea too, if the belt loops bother you. But I love your colour combinations, particularly the mustard with grey. This is a favourite of mine, too.

  9. I don't have any skirts long enough to try this but i love the way the black one looks! Maybe try it with a shirt on top, as well?

  10. Skirts as dresses is something I love playing with. . particularly because my mother (who's much taller than me) has so many beautiful long skirts that would swamp me in. This is a chic look, especially when layered .. and I'd say you look absolutely stunning and would get away with it at work!

  11. It looks good on you and decent for the classroom.I cannot say about the comfort factor for obvious reasons.I would wear it in the classroom with a cardigan on top.

  12. This is a new one on me, but it looks surprisingly...good! I guess I'd be inclined to wear the look with a neutral slim tee as you have, plus the tights and flats to keep that gamine or art chick look. I also like the cardi idea I've read above. I feel like knee-high boots would be too much thick covering, but they could look cool and edgy...you just have to try it out!

  13. Sarah--art chick, huh?

    Angie--welcome to Rags.

    Devilishly--keep playing with mom's skirts!

Leia--I will try it with a shirt. This may be the way to style the black lace button up...

    Carolyn--thanks for the color compliments.

Reva--tell Mom, you ARE planning for your future.

  14. Terri - Yes, I guess I use "art chick" to describe minimalist looks (esp. involving grey and or black) that show some creative play with shapes and proportions. Hope I haven't offended!

  15. Oh, and the art chicks are who I wanted to hang out with and be when I was growing up (still do, really).
