Bags and Tags

Sometime last week, oomph tagged me to do a post on the contents of my purse.  Until Rags began publishing regularly last August, I was not in the habit of carrying a purse.  I carried a brief case or a book bag, but if I was out and about, it was my wallet only.    And that wallet was firmly clamped under my arm. For many years I thought of purses as a visible sign of a person's vulnerability.  In one fell swoop, an interested person could make off with another's identity.

Above you'll see the tiny collection of bags I've accumulated while thrifting this past year.  The black bag on the left is made of some sort of synthetic material and features one zip and one outer pocket.  It's marketed by Talbots, though I bought it for $3.  The middle bag in the middle is by Mark Thompson, a maker of leather goods for travelers.  It has many little pockets and zippers and places to secure pens.  The strap is adaptable so it can be worn as a backpack or carried as a purse.  The leather is buttery soft.  And when I googled it, I was amazed to find it was originally a $175 bag which I'd found for $7.  The bag on the right is the one I'm currently carrying.  I bought it for .99.  The tag inside says Marizio Taituti, made in Italy.  I like the woven leather.

One of my pet peeves is women rooting around in purses big enough to carry the kitchen sink.  You may have everything with you...but whether you can find it or not is another question.  Below, you'll see what I was carrying on Thursday when I met my daughters and my mother for lunch.

~my wallet bulging with change that needs to go into the change jar, cards, coupons, sewing tape.
~the receipt from the car payment I made
~date book, where I keep a rough schedule of blog posts
~a button I got at last weekend's Maker Faire
~one allergy tab
~a mini tripod
~a men's handkerchief, used once
~spare battery and charger for my camera
~gum
~a lighter
~flossers
~one huge bobby pin for French roll purposes.
~my keys
~camera case (I got quite caught up in the philosophical problem of how one takes a photo of their camera.  My camera is a Sony Cybershot)
~four turnips, a gift from our garden to my mother.

In recent months I have been tagged a number of times.  I haven't forgotten:  Adrienne at A Rich Life; Chalkdust at Chalkdust and Boots; Meri at Meri-Go-Round; and Rad from Cohabitating Closet have all tagged me at one time or another.  I have forgotten the terms of the various awards, but it often means revealing 7 things about yourself that your readers might not have known.  So in the spirit of "playing well with others" here goes:

1)  My husband and I have captured a number of bee swarms.

2)  I was "detained" for skinny dipping in a geyser pool in a national park.

3)  Twice this year, I have been a bridesmaid.

4)  I do not carry or own a cell phone and it keeps my life sane.

5)  I am envious of my students who have participated in NaNoWriMo.

6)  I once lost my glasses and was too blind to drive home.  I tried, but could not read the signs.  Took my first exit off the Interstate and ended up on a dead end in a railroad yard at 11 p.m.  I was driving my sportscar and dressed to the nines from a conference I'd attended that day.  A man in overalls chuckled at my dilemma, called my husband, and gave him directions on how to retrieve me.

7)  If I could pursue another degree, it would be in American history.

I'd like to pass the "tag" along to

Cynthia at Be Fabulous Daily

as well as any other of my readers who would like to play.  Please don't feel obligated.  Take your time...even six months if necessary.

  1. before the minis, i rarely carried a purse either...i'd stuff my cash and cards in my pocket, or i'd carry around a small makeup-type bag (like i showed in my post) as a wallet. but, there have been too many times that i've put it down and walked away. i figured i wouldn't...couldn't forget a big bag! plus it came in handy with the minis.

you sure had some interesting experiences...thanks for sharing!

  3. 99 cent handbag is so great! I think it's beautiful and so classic looking. If you ever want to sell it...I'd gladly take it off your hands!

Skinny dipping at a national park and turnips in your handbag. I knew there was a reason I like you so much.

  4. I really love that you have 4 turnips in your bag.

  5. Terri, thanks so much for the "tag" and for including me in such a fabulous group of women.
You are so wise even about your purse. I don't always have the big purses but I often have lots of stuff on my purses that are related to my work, my to-do list and/or mi kids.

  6. I absolutely LOVE these sorts of things (I think I am chronically nosy, to be frank), so I will be delighted to accept that tag.

I always have a gigantic bag, but there's very little rooting for my stuff involved, since I favour big bags primarily to carry stuff I purchase or acquire over the course of the day, and my own stuff is easily found. Now I wonder whether to do a before-going-out or an after-going-out accounting.

  7. Terri, I love that Mark Thompson bag - it's so rich-looking, and practical too. I can't carry a big heavy purse either, it slows me down. But I can say I've never carried turnips : >

    Have a great weekend!

  8. NOTHING says glamour like handbag-turnips!

And I love that you were detained for skinny dipping... I have also been detained for skinny dipping!

Now, where'd I put my turnips...

  9. soooo the bobby pin for french roll as in french twist as in hair right? Didnt know if you had some kind of way you stabbed your french bread or something...
    Anyway, tag I guess I'm it--which reminds me I must also do duty for Ophelia's tag the other day...:~}

  10. I am guilty of a giant bag Terri, but often cannot find things in it. It is sort of my security blanket, I think! (yup, issues I need to reslove haha!) Only you can carry four turnips and still look so cool! I also love the male handkerchief, a little ode to the briefcases you used to carry : )

  11. Your handbag is remarkable neat and tidy and free from crap. I'm particularly impressed that you have turnips in there...
Actually I love seeing what is in other people's handbags too. I guess I'm just a stickybeak!

  12. Okay, the turnips got me laughing out loud. A selection of turnips has to be the best thing EVER in a handbag! And what handbag - the woven leather looks really beautiful.

  13. haha- the skinny dipping story makes me appreciate you even more! And what is an allergy tab?

  14. You have some really great thrifting purse finds!
When ever i'm thrifting, my eyes light up at the sight of anything leather, or with tags of some European country.

Definitely had a good laugh at your seven things!

  16. I like that woven leather bag.

Did you find that out of season?

I have a Sony Cyber-shot. I love how it decides what kind of photo you're taking and automatically adjusts.

  17. What is it about seeing what other people lug around in their bags that's so fascinating? I think so anyway :) And your "getting lost" fact made me laugh (although I'm sure it wasn't funny at the time!). I need to respond to some tags--I swear I'm the worst at that!

  18. I'm with Reva- too much of a maelstrom in my handbag to put on film. Your purse are gorgeous. Love that yellow buttery one.

  19. I loved reading this!! (I love how you question yourself on how to take a shot of your camera :D)

I love the seven facts too!! It made me think of something... could I interview you for my blog? (previous interview see here: http://papillonchouette.wordpress.com/2011/07/02/interview-with-crystal-at-watermoolen/) you are a fascinating person and I would love to know more about you!! (notify me on my blog or email angieke (at) gmail (dot) com thanks)

  20. I too carry a large bag, as though it provides a false sense of security. Love the bag bargains! I am interest in the mini tripod! Do you use it with your camera?

    ReplyDelete
  21. OOh! That woven leather purse is to die for! *drool*

  22. Oh my, the driving dilemma is why I carry a mobile phone. However, I only turn it on to make a phone call: I carry it for my own convenience only, not anyone else's. 20 years of being on call have made me appreciate being 'unavailable.' I try to keep my purses reasonably small as large bags give me a back ache.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Your bag collection is sensible, the woven one being the prettiest. Do you always carry the same stuff in your bag? I try to carry along only the basics, like first aid medicines, some cosmetics, small agenda, cell phone and my donut.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Well well well, didn't know you were such a bad girl. You'll never be "detained" again now that you carry your trusty turnips. You can skinny dip whenever the mood strikes and if you get caught just hurl your turnips at them as you make your getaway!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I used to feel the same way about purses/bags and like you only carried a small wallet or waist pack. I liked the freedom and before I started paying attention to clothes, wasn't concerned about style. Now I'm happy to carry a bag -- found a good Coach bag at a thrift store that's okay for now. I yearn for a leather bag but want to wait until I find one that's just right.

I love your buttery leather bag the best of the three.

  26. I am one of those that carry a huge bag and keep it full of...junk! LOL But it all seems so necessary to me!! And I love all 3 of those bags, especially the one on the right. What a deal on all of them!!

And I was going to say take a pic of your camera with your phone and then email it to yourself, but then you don't have a phone, so... take a pic in the mirror!

Oh and you HAVE to get a pedi! It does tickle a little but it's so worth it!!

  27. I do carry a big bag only because I take material for my classes ,water and somekind of snack everyday. But also because bags is my faforite accessory.I like your 3 bags because of minimal design and practicality.
I'm surprised you don't carry a cell phone. But many of us want to leave that'thing' behind...only we don't dare!

  28. The "detained for skinny dipping" put a big smile on my face and makes me like you even more than I do already. x

  29. Dear Terri,

What brilliant finds your bags were. I laughed out loud when I saw the turnips!

I love your answers. Especially getting detained for skinny dipping and the man giving your husband instructions to collect you.

Thank you so much for your lovely comments. My dad is seemingly fine but I don't think it's hit him properly. I'm sure it will after the funeral which is on Tuesday.

I wanted to drop by and say hello, I will be back soon.

Have a great week, love, C xx

  30. What fabulous bags! I find it simpler to find things in a large bag if I organize them into different smaller bags. I can usually find things blindfolded (or while driving the car).

    ReplyDelete
  31. i will say you are pretty neat. my purse is a complete disaster! i have kid stuff all over in mine and their snacks are crumbled inside. it's awful. i really love your thrifted purses! oh, and my wallet is always bulging too!

  32. Oh wow, I never thought about these implications of purses, but you're entirely right! I do carry huge purses or backpacks most of the time, but I'm pretty good at finding stuff in them :) Impressed by your bee-capturing abilities!

  33. The one thing I haven't acquired since starting blogging is purses (a couple of canvas book bags have snuck in, though). I have basically never been a bag person and am never happiers than when I actually have pockets and can ram whatever I need into them. I kind of look on purses not only as making us vulnerable, but as making us slaves to our multitude of crap. The reality is that I do need quite a bit of that multitude of crap, but I resent it. ; D

  34. Hi Terri, as somebody horribly addicted to bags, I LOVE this post! I really like the middle bag, that color is so gorgeous for summer. And the bag itself looks so international, you could carry it anywhere. I think you have inspired me to show some of my bags (and what's inside). Do you mind if I do a riff on this post? I will credit you since you are the inspiration!

  35. oomph--Yes, being a mom makes having some sort of bag NECESSARY.

Reva--one advantage of having a small bag--is that there is not so much room to accumulate. I still clean out my briefcase once a semester and some interesting things find their way to the bottom of that.

Adrienne--I bought it during a 50% off sale on a Sunday afternoon. I'll gift it to you when I'm finished with it. Hesitated to share the skinny-dipping story, but I have a few more like that.

Ashe--Well, that is unusual. I don't often carry vegetables.

Ofelia--Your purses seem to come in all sizes and you are far more conscientious than I about pairing them with your outfits.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ana--please do a before and after version! That would be fun.

Patti--I don't know how much you travel, but the Mark Thompson would be excellent--many ways to secure things like passports, keys, etc.

Sarah--I want to hear the detained for skinny-dipping story.

Paula--Yes, no weapons in my bag at this point in time, but the French Roll in my hair often doesn't last very long. Looking forward to your "tag" post.

Ambu--the handkerchief was borrowed from my husband's pocket during the heighth of my allergies! I have pictured you carrying a briefcase.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Carolyn--do you carry a handbag? I can recall ever seeing you pictured with one. Perhaps I should do a post like this every six months--I definitely carry different things in the winter.

The Waves--the turnips were out of the ordinary! The Italian bag proved to be of a good maker when I googled it. That always amazes me because I am not a practiced handbag shopper.

Meri--Allergy medicine. I take one a day almost year round. Otherwise, I remain a snot-nosed kid.

Lyddie--I know what you mean about looking at the origins of leather goods--purses from Italy and shoes from Brazil.

Sacramento--I find it hard to believe that you carry nothing interesting in your bag...

    ReplyDelete
  38. RoseAG--I love the Cybershot. All photos at Rags have been taken with it. And, yes, I did find the woven bag the end of last summer.

Shea--Yes, I'm bad about the tags too. I'm afraid that if I do it too often, I'll be tagged more. I'm not sure I have that many interesting things about myself to reveal.

Rosebud--perhaps just a teasing picture of the interior of your bag.

Angie--Oh, it would be fun to do an interview with you! I suppose I could have snapped a pic of my camera with my computer camera...but too complicated.

Judith--I bought the tiny tripod in a computer store (Micro Computer) last December. I paid $2 for it and it allows you to place your camera in awkward places.

    ReplyDelete
  39. LawyerDoll--thank you. Ads that had been popping up on my browser all last summer let me know that it was the type to buy. I've seen lots like it this summer.

Shelley--my thoughts about cellphones is that they create as many problems as they solve. When we take road trips, we do carry a pre-paid cell phone and use it only to dial out.

Metscan--the contents of my bag vary by season. The turnips are NOT usual...and often I carry a hair band myself.

workingpoor--I suspect my days of skinny dipping are over, but one never knows.

Susan--I gifted my daughters designer bags from local thrifts last Christmas. They were so delighted with my choices (not usual for me) that they have each one purchased several more since then. You'll find one soon, I'm sure.

  40. Joy--I'm putting a pedicure on my bucket list. They do make a vast difference in the appearance of ones's feet.

Angie--I did carry a cellphone for a few years, but I am not convinced that cell carriers are truly service oriented. I challenged a bill one time and it took me 6 months to receive the documents I'd requested.

Vix--Well, I've toned down a bit in my old age...but I'm sure I still do a few things that would outrage my students. :)

christina--good to hear from you again. DH was none too happy about having to get out of bed to "save" me, but he did share a chuckle with the man in overalls...between guys, you know.

StaceyKay--perhaps I am serving as a reminder of the "old ways."

    ReplyDelete
  41. Claire--mommies MUST carry a big purse full of Cheerios and crackers and all kinds of first aid! I understand.

Poet--actually, swarming bees are generally harmless unless you damage their queen.

Emily--Yes, I prefer pockets myself! The less the better and having free hands is the MOST important.

Jill--I have no corner on posts like this. I only did it because I was tagged. I would love to see the contents of your bag.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yikes! I just saw this! Oh boy, I will play. Thank you for tagging me! As for your bags -- wow, do I ever love that one in the middle. Any time you want to start cleaning out your closet, let me know :-). I carry everything, and I mean everything with me. I blame it on my ADHD -- and the more stressed I get, the more I run around like a chicken without my head, and I grab more and more things for my bag. I'm so terrified of forgetting something.
