Visible Monday: Watermelon and Coca Cola

We have been under a heat advisory in my neck of the woods for three days now...and we need to keep laying low until Friday when this inferno of humidity and high temperatures passes.  It tends to sap the life and creativity out of person...

Thank goodness for Visible Monday, an effort sponsored by Patti at NotDeadYet to coax those of us who worry about invisibility for whatever reason out of our shells.  This roundup of posts is open to all.  Check out the looks this week here.

I changed the look I had planned to post just so I could include this juicy piece of watermelon above.  I have come across a number of bloggers this summer who has sampled what they call a "watermelon" look, combining red and green.  At right, you'll see my version.  You've seen all the pieces before--the green tee is by Faded Glory, the green gingham blouse by Orvis, the red skirt by Ralph Lauren, all thrifted.  You'll never see them in this combination again.  I think this is only the second time this summer I've knotted a shirt.  Probably should have rolled the cuffs a second time.

Shortly after snapping this pic, I ate the entire piece of watermelon above.  It was a sweet one too, though I sort of miss the seeded melons and the ensuing fun with seeing how far a person could spit one.

We have a couple of baby watermelons we are babying along in our garden.  Watermelons have a tendency to disappear from one's garden about the time they are ripe.  We even discussed the possibility of placing an alarm on ours.

We snapped this photo in early June, before the month of primary colors began at Rags. We were in a small Kansas town for a delightful jazz concert and had a bit of time to kill before the concert began. Somehow Friday's post about tanning, with always involved a can of Tab (remember the pink can and the lone calorie), brought this old commercial to mind. Any of my readers remember this?

  1. I love your interpretation of "the watermelon look"! I hope your watermelons reach maturity without disappearing- its the perfect treat when its this hot!

  2. yup! definitely remember that commercial -- never loved it, but I do remember it.
It must be very cool to grow watermelons in your garden -- I'm quite sure there's just not enough sunshine and heat for them to mature here, most years at least, and def. not this one. While the rest of you are sweltering, we're barely getting up to the low twenties, Celsius (so just like a comfortable room temperature! as a high!).

  3. I certainly do remember that commercial. Stuck in a tiny Louisiana town, I thought that Italian hilltop looked like Nirvana. I still think so, though I haven't had a soft drink in eons.

That is truly a watermelon pink skirt! It's exactly the shade of the sweet melon. So cool, and so refreshing...

  4. I like your "watermelon look"! I think I say it every time you wear it... but I LOVE this skirt! It's such a pretty shade of red.
And I'm impressed you managed to wear a long sleeve shirt with this crazy heat we are having!

What happens to your home grown melons? Do they get stolen or eaten by woodland creatures? We tried planting some once and weren't able to harvest any because the animals got to them before we did!

  5. I love the watermelon look! Super summery... Stay cool and safe!

  6. Love the outfit! Hope your watermelons don't disappear! That old ad is running on tv here in Finland right now... The text at the end is removed though and there are some bits newer added to the end, but it all starts with that very ad. xxx

  7. The watermelon look you came up with is awesome! I love watermelons, too, they are so refreshing on hot summer days...

  8. Gorgeous colourful look again, Terri.
I do love a watermelon, preferably soaked in vodka overnight. x

  9. That is pretty low, to steal somebody's watermelons! How outrageous!
I shy away from green and red together, which is a bit Christmass-y in my book! However I think your watermelon look is wonderful here. You've gone more the way of hot pink and pale green which looks great!

  10. Love watermelon! Love the photo with the coca cola sign. Funnily enough this post reminded me of summer in spain - when the temperature gets hot and its humid there I eat stacks of watermelon and drink 2L of coke daily!!

  11. Love the watermelon colour combination, very summery. I make watermelon, feta and mint salad in summer it's delicious. How fantastic is that Coca Cola sign?

  12. The watermelon looks soooo good...it kind of makes me want to go to the grocery!! I love this skirt...it looks great with every outfit you have put it with...it is the perfect fit! A refreshing summer post...

  13. I love your red and green outfit!!!
    Come follow my blog :)

  14. That watermelon does indeed look amazing! And I'm not a hugest fan of the fruit, although I admit to how refreshing it is on a hot day (a very traditional after-meal treat in Greece in the summer). I AM, however, a huge fan of the color combo. And you nailed it.

  15. That slice of watermelon looks perfect. I can't believe that poeple would steal melons from your garden! I like your watermelon look. I think the light green works well with the red :)

  16. Love the watermelon look and I wouldn't mind a seedless melon either.. yum. I am a useless pip spitter so I find them rather distracting :D

    ReplyDelete
  17. Terri, that is a great color combination that I had not thought of yet for this summer - you look very cool. Thanks so much for participating in Visible Monday.

  18. Terri, Love the outfit. That skirt is perfect on you. It is already hot here at 8:20am. It is supposed to be 105 today, so I know what you are feeling.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Ah, Tab! How well I remember it.

Now I'm craving a slice of watermelon!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think you're the only person I know who could look so chic while using watermelon as an inspiration! Nicely done.

Condolences on the heat -- it's coming up our way, too (and would you believe I don't like the taste of watermelon? Wish I did, because I could use the cooling right about now).

    ReplyDelete
  21. You definitely need to wear that combo again! It's great! Watermelon or not... :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yes, I remember!

Your watermelon outfit is perfect but more importantly, I'm glad you ate that luscious looking piece of the real thing!

    ReplyDelete
  23. love this! I love that instantly watermelon and coke just bring up all these summer memories

    ReplyDelete
  24. oh man, I love old signage like that, although it does seem in awfully good condition to have not been repainted sometime "recently" (I consider within 30 years recent in terms of architecture). Who is stealing your watermelons for goodness sakes? I hope not people.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I am a sick woman; I LOVED Tab. And it tasted just horrible, but it was horrible in a compelling way.

I miss the watermelons back home. We only seem to get small ones from Spain, and they're nice enough, but never quite the same as the ones I remember from my former life. I don't think that's nostalgia; I really think there's a difference.

    ReplyDelete
  26. That watermelon DOES look good...now I'm going to be craving it all day! I love the watermelon-inspired look too! I need to get more green in my wardrobe so I can do the 'melon too :) And the heat's just as bad here, and I don't know about you but I'm so over it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh Terri, you would be a watermelon seed spitter, wouldn't you?!!
Loved that commercial. I had forgotten that everyone's Coke bottle was labled in their own language.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Ah, watermelons... now I might have to try red and green. I think I missed out on this trend! ; )

    ReplyDelete
  29. LOL I DO remember that commercial! I was a young girl when that came out. Ironic how Coke sang about loving on the world and how seriously unhealthy the stuff is! (But hey, I allow myself my diet coke every Friday!....I've officially picked my poison!) Once again, you look just stunning. Seriously Terri, you carry yourself in such a regal manner. Everything you've worn looks great on you and this length of skirt suits you to a T! Huge watermelon seed spittin' hug! ~Serene

  30. Stay cool dear, and love that outfit. You look great.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I love you in front of the Coca-Cola sign! What a great picture. I also like the red and green on you, that is a color combination that is growing on me. It's not as hot here as it is where you are (yet) but that watermelon looked so good, now I want a gigantic slice of it! Stay cool! XO, Jill

  32. So why wont you be wearing the watermelon outfit again? Still love watermelon eventhough I lived on it for 2 weeks in Greece once..
I do remember that ad. Cant believe they still had the glass bottles still in 71.

    ReplyDelete
  33. This is one stylish interpretation of Watermelon. . :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Terri, great red shirt, skirt, chucks and of course the great Coca Cola!
Thanks for posting the commercial it brought back so many cool and icy-cold memories of drinking bottle cokes in the middle of the day in the hot summer days in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

  35. Not a red-and-green fan, though I must admit having a pale green with bright red works better, I think. I never thought of it as 'watermelon', more 'Christmas'...or now Italian

    http://shelleyshouse.blogspot.com/2010/08/more-italian-women.html

Pity about the heat. It was 106 when we were in Oklahoma...impossible. That said, we have scattered showers and a high of 64 today. I might trade you for a while.

Shame about the watermelon thiefs! How very annoying. I loved watermelon as a child but of course it's not the same over here in England and it's not the same without the heat. Time and again we find that local food and drink don't export well so we enjoy them when we are there and don't try to bring them home.

Yes, I remember Tab - makes Diet Coke taste heavenly, not to mention Diet Dr Pepper (which I can't stand now). And the commercial. I've long appreciated the power of advertising, given how sentimental we are about old commercials...and how bloody long we remember catch phrases! It's rather frightening, actually.

  36. Watermelon with no seeds is half fun ,some things should stay the way they are!!!Also the term watermelon look sounds so funny but you grounded it and it looks just like something you can wear in real life! But it's still visible because of the colors! good job!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Watermelon red! Even the words scream hot summer day. The skirt looks great on you!

    ReplyDelete
  38. nicely done! i did try this once wearing a bright a$$ red dress with a bright a$$ green bag. not sure if i was successful in not exuding christmas cheer!

don't remember that commercial, but i totally need to go home and listen to it (no speakers here!).

re: tanning...haha, you'd think us be experts! my mom grew up on the beach and NEVER used sunscreen. i don't even remember her using it on us. guess it really wasn't an issue then...just a way of life :)

    [oomph.]

  39. Mmmmm... now I want to come over and steal some watermelon!

  40. Meri--I hope those watermelons reach maturity too, but if they don't, I'm pretty sure it would be because DH helped himself to one as a kid. Karma, you know.

Mater--Well, it is definitely not cool in our garden this week...I envy YOUR weather.

Charlotte--I don't drink soft drinks either. The commercial though reminds me of a mindset I had in the early 70s.

Mel--in my neighborhood it would be human animals who would make off with the melon.

Daniella--doing my best to stay cool. Afternoon naps...

    ReplyDelete
  41. Charlie--the same ad, very curious. I wonder if it appeals to a renewal of the same spirit in that demographic.

    Wendy--do you like melon?

Leia--I enjoy all types of melon, especially a honeydew when I can get one that just right.

Vix--It has been many years since I've "soaked" a watermelon!

Carolyn--I doubt that I would wear this out into the world or to campus. I like the green gingham with the red, but it is a bit Christmasy...

    ReplyDelete
  42. Veshoevius--your comment reminded me of a friend in high school who literally lived on CocaCola in high school--something like 16 per day!

That'sNotMyAge--I've been meaning to try watermelon with the mint and feta. No feta on hand at the moment, but plenty of mint in the garden. I also like chili powders on cool veggies--like cucumbers.

Pam--Yes, the skirt is a keeper, but it is enough of a bright without a green top in my opinion, but I'm sticking to my plan for the month...stubbornly.

Cecylia--Welcome to Rags! And I will come for a visit soon.

Chalkdust--thank you. Watermelons are somewhat rare at our house...just because it's a lot for the two of us to eat...and DH doesn't quite understand moderation.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Allison--yes, the gingham blouse tones down the loud colors...slightly.

Stef--thank you. Sounds like the seedless variety were developed for people like you.

Patti--I wouldn't have thought of it either if I hadn't seen other bloggers attempt. I'm not sure I would wear the look very far from home.

SheWhoAccessorizes--I can't even bear to check the heat index these days and it is supposed to be worse tomorrow. I take naps in the afternoon, that's how I'm coping.

UneFemme--Tab was my drink for several years...and now I can't imagine why.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Anne--Well, I don't recommend this look. I have a suggestion though about keeping cool. Juice a cucumber, add soda water and lemon. Or sprinkle the sliced cucumbers with chili powder.

Wilted Magnolia--thank you for the kind words.

Susan--Yes, I ate a GENEROUS amount of that melon!

LaFille--Lemonade might bring up the memories too.

Melina--I suspect that this sign WAS recently repainted and likely not at the expense of the CocaCola company. Probably an effort to add quaintness to this little town.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Ana--Yes, the watermelons are a smaller and more convenient size these days. Somewhere in the early days of my blog there is a picture of me with a HUGE old-fashioned watermelon, upwards of 30 pounds.

Shea--yes, I'm starting to get cabin fever from the heat. Think cool thoughts.

Beryl--Yep, I'm a little ornery like that, but I'm not actually very good at it by comparison to my kids.

Emily--If you try red and green, I suggest toning it down. I think I look like Christmas in July!

Serene--I'll accept that hug. And, yes, there is an irony in the commericial. I loved the sentiment of it though when I was but a sweet young thing.

Dani--you must be sweltering where you are too.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Jill--this heat wave is a very, very serious thing. I find myself appealing to the AC gods that people don't find themselves without some sort of cooling relief.

Paula--I want to hear all about living on watermelon in Greece. A blog post please. While I like the outfit in the photo, I'm not sure how appropriate it is to wear out into the world.

    Devilish--you are very tactful. ;)

Ofelia--yes, sometimes the greatest value of a chilled coke bottle was putting the condensation against one's skin.

Shelley--I'm beginning to think that it is time for me to come visit YOU. What kind of American foods do you find yourself craving?

Angie--Visible is putting it mildly. I didn't actually wear this one out in public, though I did work in it in front of my computer...

Judith--at long last, I mailed your package off to you. And, yes, many of my colors this month have "screamed."

    ReplyDelete
  47. oomph--perhaps you were the inspiration for MY watermelon look. As for the tanning, we used to believe that a good burn early in the summer lead to a tan that would protect us for the remainder of the summer.

MarieEve--Welcome to Rags. I will come for a visit soon.

LawyerDoll--the melons are still pretty little...

  48. Cute outfit. I'm sure I've told you this before, but just in case, you have great legs!!

How hot has it been there? I'm almost jealous, but I know I would be completely miserable if it were as hot here as it is in the rest of the country. We have had exactly 78 minutes of weather about 80 :(
