In this second variation on a theme, I am wearing the trousers my husband frequently wore when we were married 15+ years ago. I'd promised Iman at Mishaps and Miracles that I would try this eventually. Though DH could still squeeze into them, they fit me better than my own best black slacks. The bow tie is a derivative from an idea I saw at Susie Bubble month's ago. She was sporting a lace bow tie. I've searched for wired lace and never found it, though I opted for this patterned white and bought at entire roll of the stuff in the bridal department at Michaels. I like wire in these feminine bow ties. It allows you to make a fresh bow tie each time you wear it and the wire gives you some control over the shape of the ribbon. I like mine with a whimsical shape.
And finally, I've added a velvet swing jacket so that it looks like I'm going places, even though these pictures were snapped during a morning at home with very good light.
On an unrelated note, we've detected skunk smells around the house off and on for the past two months. We smelled it in our garage one day. It awoke DH from a nap one evening. We've sniffed high and low for the source of the smell. I suspected that we might have a polecat that I had taken a liking to our dryer vent, but the house is on three levels and we catch whiffs on all three. Would any of my readers have a clue what we might be dealing with?

I love the wired lace bow idea a lot. You are doing black and white very well, indeed. Everything is so elegant!
ReplyDeleteNo idea on the skunk smell, I'm afraid. Then again, I haven't smelled a skunk in at least 15 years.
Your lace bow is very clever! We seem to have a neighborhood skunk who "makes the rounds" early in the morning, usually just about the time my dogs are ready to go outside. So far we've been lucky and had no "close encounters."
ReplyDeleteI really love your black and white looks (much like Pam chose for today), and your lace bow is so pretty.
ReplyDeleteSadly, our only skunk encounter in recent years involved a deceased skunk. He'd passed away in the crawl space under the house, and wow, what a smell! We had to hire the really skinny guy to remove the remains. I never thought he charged enough.
LOVE it! You did menswear... literally!
ReplyDeleteI like the white blouse and black skirt. Cute!
ReplyDeleteDoe pee smells pretty bad. Any chance you have a doe and buck communicating on a small tree near your house? We had a rub about 50 feet from our house that even surprised my hunter husband (that it was right up here so close to human stuff). That might explain why the smell comes and goes. They travel through and leave fresh courting messages!
So dashing- love the pearl details and the lace bow tie! The velvet jacket is swell, as they say!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely adore that black skirt! You look beautiful in it!

Both of these outfits are so lux and chic! I love the hyper feminine first outfit juxtaposed by the masculine second outfit. Amazing how one blouse can transition.
ReplyDeleteYou could have a family of skunks living in your yard area and coming up the house, or if you have any kind of basement/attic space that might have openings to the house proper, they could have nested someone in/around the house or garage..
Also potential weasel. I've heard they can be especially stinky in the wild.
Love the bow idea. And that first outfit is AMAZING!! I LOVE LOVE that blouse!!!
ReplyDeleteOh my, oh my! That first ensemble is just delightful! The skirt is so gorgeous and fits you just perfectly.
ReplyDeleteYou are so cute! I have a soft spot for the menswear look, but the first way is SO my favorite!
ReplyDeleteBeing lower in the waist, men's shorts always fit me better than higher waisted women's. You've inspired me to check into their pants too.
ReplyDeleteWhen I lived in the country I remember one summer when we had a skunk smell on and off around the house for a few weeks. Then suddenly poof - it disappeared. Maybe you'll have the same luck.
I ADORE how you look in the shirt, pants and bowtie - super chic!
ReplyDeleteI love the first look the best. You look like a little girl ready to go to the prom.
ReplyDeleteHAPPY NEW YEAR, dear Terri
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Terri, I'm such a huge fan of black and white and all of these looks are great! I just love the first one best of all...it's sooooooo feminine and pretty! You had to feel just soooooo girly in it! I also have found that when it comes to slacks, men's actually fit me better. Go figure! Hugs to you Terri! ~Serene
ReplyDeleteHi Terri!
ReplyDeleteWe have those little creatures around in the summer.
I heard stories about them living in walls, they had to rely on professionals to get rid of them.
Just wait and see or in this case smell!
Love your outfit, you said there was a red crinoline under that dress? It would of look nice to see some of it
Nice bow tie, i love men accessories in a feminine way.
Ariane
Like Ariane, I'm hoping for a sneaky peak at your red petticoat!
ReplyDeleteI love the skirt, it's a beautiful 50s-style shape, but I think I like the blouse best with your husband's trousers - very chic, especially with the bow.
We don't have skunks in the UK so I can't offer any advice on that subject! xxx
The wired bow tie is a great idea. Need to file that away for the future! Love your black and white looks and a white blouse trimmed with pearls - divine!
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful and oh so stylish looks! Thanks so for sharing your creativity!
ReplyDeleteam just loving that pearly blouse!!
ReplyDeleteI love all of these looks, but I think I like the top look best. You know I'm a sucker for a good midi-skirt. And that is a great midi-skirt.
ReplyDeleteThe first look is so elegant, the proportions just great. The velvet jacket makes for a great basic!
ReplyDeleteI love all of these looks, but the first is just exquisite!!
ReplyDeleteMy experience is if it smells like a skunk...it is a skunk! I we have a bunch of them in Texas!
So elegant, I can see why DH raved about the first blouse, that blouse with the skirt is my favorite look of the three, but I like them all.
ReplyDeleteThe bow tie with the wire sounds intriguing.
Ana--thank you! Perhaps I should move to GB to avoid this smell!
ReplyDeleteDejaPseu--what is so odd about this aroma is that it comes and goes and is never very strong. We are accustomed to possums but not skunks. Having empty houses in the neighborhood does NOT help matters.
Patti--I pray this isn't a deceased critter, although DH is my skinny guy. :)
Gracefully50--Yep, I'd been meaning to try these trousers for a while...but waited to have hubby's permission.
Kitty--Welcome to Rags! Not much chance of a doe/buck nearby. We are smack dab off the square of a little town.
DamnGreenDress--I bought the pearl blouse in a Goodwill for $3. I was a bit afraid that it was slightly over-the-top. It was a petite size, which I can get away with on top.
ReplyDeleteMeagan--yep, the skirt is a keeper. Wish that I had more dress-up occasions to wear it.
MeganMae--It is possible that we have a family of skunks living in a window well...doubt it would be a weasel.
Joy--I believe the blouse is a hit, when I had worried that it was too much. Perhaps I've taken minimalism to an extreme.
Catie--thank you! Hey, Everybody, Catie is in this month's Glamour!!
Meri--no doubt I will try the trousers again...perhaps with suspenders next time.
ReplyDeleteSavvy--I do hope hope the problem disappears. I often buy men's jeans, but have never tried the trousers before. This experiment may expand my thrifting areas.
Ki--thank you. Taking a second look at that photo, I should have bothered with some make-up.
Sacramento--I think it must be the slight pigeon-toe and the hands behind the back that creates the little girl effect.
Serene--You are the second to say that about men's slacks. I like the fine wool of the fabric...so may have to try thrifting a pair or too. Not many men are as slender as DH.
Ariane--Somewhere back in the archives of Rags (around September) there is a peak of the red crinoline.
ReplyDeleteCurtise--Ana mentioned the same think about the lack of skunks where you live. Like you, I favored the blouse with the britches--an unexpected combo, no?
Judith--I've pulled the wired bow tie trick at Rags before. You are welcome to the idea.
Tamera--thank you.
YoungatHeart--Yes, I've decided the blouse was a real find.
Gracey--I think by the end of the month, all of my looks for January will have hit below the knee. Go figure.
ReplyDeleteAngie--Do you think I could have added the velvet jacket with the skirt? I'm not used to a jacket with a swing shape.
Pam--Is it a skunk if the smell starts out very faint? Your comment doesn't make me hopeful. :(
Susan--You should try a similar bow tie. Very inexpensive.
Love your outfits. I don't think I have ever seen you look less than perfect in anything.
ReplyDeleteAs to the skunks. My sister at one time had them tunneling under her house. They had to have a professional find them and eradicate them.
Hi Terri, I hope you will do a closeup of this lace and send me a picture so I can include you in the lace post on Feb. 1 that Adrienne and I are doing. Join us! XO, Jill
ReplyDeleteloving the black and white ensembles! the bow on that shirt is so fantastic!!! oh man, skunks are the worst! i wish i could help but i have no idea. good luck with that!
ReplyDeletespinning-threads.blogspot.com
AMAZING! I love this black & white outfit! Specially the shirt!
ReplyDeletebtw, I am hosting a giveaway in my blog... a $100 voucher to spend at Boticca! I would love to see you around :D
xoxo

I love how different these looks are even though they have very similar components. I love the elegance of the pearls on the collar, and the whimsy of the lace bowtie. I'm going to have to try the bow tie trick!
ReplyDeleteDebbie--If you want to see the less than perfect looks, be sure to visit my Tumblr account! Those are less than perfect. I really do not want skunks tunneling...must check for signs of that.
ReplyDeleteJill--I may have to think about the lace. I had made a note of it and then forgot where I was to post the lace...I'll think about it.
Claire--do you even have skunks in your area?
Vicky--Welcome to Rags! And, soon, I will come for a visit.
Shea--I hope you do try the bow tie trick. The price is right.
Ha! Pepe went and got an MFA! :)
ReplyDeleteThe blouse with the black trousers is ever-so chic!
I have always love the menswear look, classic!
ReplyDeleteYour first look is so elegant - i your last, I adore the velvet jacket!
ReplyDeleteChic on the Cheap
Very shoe, Terri. Very, very shoe.
ReplyDeleteI approve of all three of these looks. You look elegant, in command, and ready to tackle the world.
Love these looks. Especially the modified Herrera up top:).
ReplyDeleteI bet I could wear some of Bill's trousers...but I'm scared to try (what if I couldn't get in them!!?). Wish I could see the pearls better - blogger doesn't let one click and enlarge anymore, sadly. I love velvet, but aim for more casual styles so I don't feel too 'costumey'. I think your mother-of-the bride look was completely perfect just the way it was!
ReplyDeleteNo idea about the skunk. We had one move in under the house when I was a child and it was a v. tricky business getting him to move out. Fortunately he didn't spray. The thought of skunk smell almost made me homesick...weird or what?
I do like both of these, but the second look is my favourite. I'm a sucker for menswear, and I love the lace bow tie.
ReplyDeleteI love the menswear-inspired tuxedo! =)
ReplyDeletepinkchampagnefashion.blogspot.com
You are pulling off that masculine/feminine tuxedo wear beautifully!
ReplyDeleteAch, the bow-neck blouse is marvelous!
ReplyDeleteyou are so diane keaton in both of these outfits! and i love diane keaton!
ReplyDeleteThat blouse is too good! I love the three ways you styled it, but the first is my fav.
ReplyDeleteto look for: Style
Raquelita--Yeah for MFAs, but good luck getting anyone to recognize it as a "terminal" degree!
ReplyDeleteBella--I love menswear too and probably don't do it enough.
Lyddie--Yes, I like the jacket, but the velvet isn't actually very sumptuous.
Kionon--thank you!
LPC--modified Herrara, huh? I'm learning my designers in a very backwards way.
Shelley--Heaven forbid, a skunk smell makes you nostalgic. A hawk or a sunflower or a tornado perhaps.
Miss Peregrin--Welcome to Rags! I'm tryin' to do my homey, Janelle Monae proud.
ReplyDeleteHope--Welcome back to Rags! This is not quite tuxedo...need a jacket.
Carolyn--thank you!
Sal--your opinion matters to me.
twobirds--Diane Keaton, really! I love that.
Thessa--Welcome to Rags! I agree that the blouse was a true find.
LOVE that first look! The skirt is absolutely amazing, it fits you so well and the cut is super flattering! You look super stylish in all three outfits! xxx
ReplyDeleteAargh--I'm only now finding your comment. Many thanks!
DeleteYou are really back! How fabulous are these outfits! And you're so cute modelling them.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the critter, whatever it might be. My husband recently found that the mink we occasionally see scampering across the beach have been trying to set up camp underneath the woodshed. Not good. Not good at all. You need to get that No Vacancy sign up quickly!
Mater--do minks have a smell? Many years ago I visited a mink farming operation and that had a smell, but then there were so many of the critters.
Deletethere's been so many DIYs for beaded or studded collars...so this blouse was an excellent find. plus it's the kind of feminine blouse that looks great with just a pair of jeans and heels, too.
ReplyDelete[oomph.]
I'd wear the blouse with jeans, if it was a bit longer. I bought it in a petite, though my torso is pretty long (and not petite.)
DeleteLove that pearl collar! Very pretty. And I love that you are wearing your hubby's pants. How cute is that? Good luck with that issue. I had a similar problem a couple of years ago. I kept smelling a dead animal. I couldn't figure out what the hell it was and where it was. I thought my cat had caught something and the thing managed to crawl away and then died. I finally realized that when my electricity had gone out, it broke the freezer in my garage (it never cycled back on), and all my frozen food had defrosted and rotted ... aggh ... that was a horrible horrible nightmare to clean.
ReplyDeleteOh, Kari, I don't think the task of cleaning a freezer like this has ever fallen to me, but I have certainly heard the tales of people who have...
DeleteWhat a cracking set of outfits! I especially love the first one with the skirt - you look so elegant. That blouse is lovely! And it works really well with the masculine trousers too.
ReplyDeleteV.--thank you. I think the blouse was a lucky find. Oh, now that you bring the foxes up, that is a REAL possibility! We have a dovecote with probably 100+ pigeons/doves. It makes sense that a fox might be stalking them.
DeleteBTW - we get foxes - they make the back yard smell pretty bad and the chemical stuff you lay down to ward them off is just as awful. My sympathy.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely love your first outfit. You look adorable and chic. :)
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Cathy@Natural Fibers for Bedding
