Visible Monday: Capsule Wardrobe edition

Today kicks off the Capsule Wardrobe challenge at Small Fabric of my Life.  This is the first time I have participated, but the rules as I understand it go something like this:

  • Between Feb 20th and Feb 24th you need to choose 10 items from your wardrobe including skirts, dresses, tops, knitwear, shoes to mix and match.
  • You can add five accessories such as scarves but hosiery, jewellery and underwear is not included.
  • Outerwear is not included as it is still very cold.
I have chosen the following items:  one jacket, one charcoal grey pencil skirt, one pair black slacks, 3 blouses--one short-sleeved in blue and two long sleeved silk blouses, one sweater vest, and one pair of black jeans.   For shoes, I have a pair of grey suede wedges and black heeled loafers.

My accessories include my Picasso scarf, a hat (!), a black belt, and my black purse/book bag.  I had added  pieces of jewelry, but am belatedly realizing that these needn't count.  I can add one more accessory.

This mix will challenge my usual style in that I'll likely have to wear a silk blouse with jeans, formerly an unwritten rule AND I will need to wear heels with jeans, something many bloggers do, but that I don't.

This first look  combines 6 of these pieces.  The loafers are thrifted by George (Walmart brand).  The skirt is by Anne Taylor, and the blue blouse is by Loft.  The jacket is ruched in the sleeve and features a peplum I've never worn before; it is by Boston Design studio.  All items, to include the scarf and the hat were thrifted.

And this post is part of the Visible Monday round-up.  This weekly event, organized by Patti at Not Dead Yet Style, is a great way to get your feet wet as a style blogger and to meet other women doing the same.

  1. I really like the second look...so professional, but that color blue in the first top looks great on you! I look forward to seeing how you mix things up...I haven't participated in a event like this yet...maybe I will some day!!

    1. Pam--the first top is under the jacket in the look on the left. I'm afraid my looks will be fairly dull by comparison to some of the others.

  2. This challenge sounds like fun - within reach, but still making one *think* about what to wear. Like Pam, I really like that blue on you, and the whole look is professional and modern. Thanks so much for linking up to Visible Monday, Terri.

    1. Patti--This blouse was a lucky find, after Christmas in Little Rock. Thanks for sponsoring Visible Monday...that's a discipline too and nicely organizes my entire blog week.

  3. I love the blue on you. The second look is very professorial.
I haven't ever participated in one of these challenges. I just don't have that amount of discipline any more.

    1. Debbi--I'm never really required to look THIS professional, but the skirt and top is something I might actually teach in.

  4. I love the shade of blue in that top! This challenge sounds like fun. I'd have to do it in a week off work though. Working in childcare means that my clothes for work are decidedly unfun - black pants & a polo shirt. At least I'd come in under the item count easily, haha.

    1. Miss Peregrin--It is a pretty blue, just a shade lighter than navy. Actually, the clothes you must wear are the most fun, or at least the most comfy.

  6. Very pretty blue blouse and I love that scarf...and how you've tied it.
I have not yet joined one of these types of challenges either. I think, like Debbi, I am not disciplined and focused enough. I guess that's why they call it a "challenge". haha

    1. Lisa--Welcome to Rags! I didn't think I was disciplined enough but by comparison to some of Kendi's 30 for 30 challenges, this one seems so doable.

    2. I did it a few times - last feb, then in the summer, and in the winter before that.

  10. I break out in a cold sweat just reading about the wardrobe rules of a capsule challenge. I just don't think. I. could. do. it. But an effective way to get over those pesky rules, as you say. You look great in those two shots above! And I hope you enjoy your new combos, especially the heels with jeans.

    1. Melanie--in some ways, have rules brings out my creativity more. It's like when I ask creative writers to write a sonnet rather than in free verse. Some of the results are amazing.

  11. That jacket is very nice on you. This Challenge sounds like my packing for travel. I can't imagine doing it on purpose otherwise, but it makes for a nice light suitcase, and really, if it's enough clothes for 5 days, it's probably enough for 14. I could never settle for just two pairs of shoes if my closet was right there, tempting me.

    1. Beryl--I think in my case, I could probably stretch it out to 14 days, but that's because I have no compulsions about repeats.

    2. I'm with you, Terri. If you're got it right, an outfit should be repeated.

  12. I would really struggle with this capsule wardrobe challenge, so I am interested to see how others fare!
The blue blouse looks faulous on you, Terri, and the outfit looks very smart and elegant.
I like the rule-breaking which will occur - silk and heels with jeans, go for it! xxx

  14. I must say- those to outfits look great on you. They really do. I´d not add anything, nor would I take anything away. Perfect.

  15. Great looking outfits! I am always amazed at how well you get things put together, and that it's all thrifted. My idea of heels with jeans is my Merrell clogs, it would be hard for me.

How much time/mileage do you spend assembling these outfits? Are they accumulated over months, days, weeks? Did they turn up in the heat of summer? I think it would help to include the process of acquiring them in the "costing" of the outfits.

    1. Rose--lately, I've been thinking I should keep track of the gas and of the TIME invested in my thrifting, although I have toned it down since last year. And, yes, I shop off season.

  16. Well done on participating! much as I love travelling light I don't do capsule wardrobes when I'm at home, I'm far too fickle to be that disciplined.
In my opinion jeans should always be dressed up, I'm sure you'll be converted. x

  17. Bravo for you for participating. I love the idea of capsule wardrobes. Sometimes I think my wardrobe is so limited that it is, in effect, a capsule wardrobe. But when I read the rules of this one, I realize I am wrong! I'm not sure I could do it. But I expect you'll do a smashing job! I look forward to seeing what you put together.

    1. Most of my workaday outfits are actually capsules. I will wear one item from the day before on the following day. I think I'll have things leftover, but it is because I don't accessorize much.

  18. I thought about taking this on (did it once a few years ago) but didn't get organized -- I'll enjoy watching you be creative with your capsule instead. I like these two looks already.

  24. Hi Terri,

First i love your cobalt blue blouse, such a pretty color on you!
About Morgan baths, yes it is still in operation, it is beautiful inside, it was beside my old flat on Morgan street
The Dufresne brothers who were in the shoe business built several opulent buildings, nothing but the best for the working class in those days. They build the library on Ontario street which was then the city hall and then the radium center in the sixties and then the library. They build Maisonneuve Market, you should see the fountain, it is one of a kind in Montreal. They also built Dufresne castle which was their residence, abandonned until the seventies but restored and now an art deco museum.

    Have a great day Terri
