Visible Monday: Ellie Tahari edition

I found this Tahari pencil skirt in a Little Rock, Arkansas Goodwill store.  Par for the course, I did not try it on until I was home, hundreds of miles away.  The pencil cut of the skirt is a little longer and comes higher on the torso than I'm accustomed to and it is a bit too narrow around my "winter waist".  I've yet to wear the skirt to campus though I styled the daylights out of it one Saturday in January.

In the first look, I'm sporting a silk sweater with a strand of brass beads.  In one blurry photo I'd added my leather jacket, the same color as the skirt, with this look.

In look number two, I thought of this silk brocade vest and drug out a green silk blouse to pair with it, a color combination I would never have come up with without the vest to suggest it.

In look number three, I'm sporting a vintage acrylic sweater with simple line highlights.  I like the sweater, but think the color is too similar to the skirt.  The look needs something.  If I tuck the sweater in, the lines disappear and I don't like the sweater any more.

In look number 4, I've paired the skirt with a dusty rose brocade vest and casual pink blouse I often wear with jeans for a dressier look.  Of all the looks, I think number 5 with a rust red sweater and belt is the look most likely to actually appear on campus one day this week.  All items have been thrifted.

Today I am likely to finish the 75th of the papers I will have graded since last Monday. I get so grumpy when I have so many essays to grade that I have to do them in small batches of 5 at a time.   There is light at the end of this tunnel.  And I am emerging for Visible Monday, a weekly event sponsored by Patti at NotDeadYet Style.  Come join us there.

  1. I like all your combos, although I'm such a sucker for a green/brown mix - I love that vest. The red is smashing too. Your smile in these photos is great - I'm wondering if it's because you are near the end of your marathon. Whatever it is, it looks good on you. Maybe it's just the dressing up?! Always fun.

  11. I like all the looks, but the last 2 are especially lovely! I like the cream and brown sweater, too, and think it might look nice belted, as well (if you have a wide leather belt). I'm so envious of your fabulous pencil skirt. Even though I experimented with A-line skirts this week, I always come back to the sleek pencil shape. Love.

    1. Anne--I like pencil skirts too, but sometimes when I wear them I actually think about what I would do if I suddenly had to run. And, the answer is--I would have to hike it way up and expose my underthings and dash!

  13. I agree with metscan and Debbi about #3 - but I think the shoe distracts from the beautiful lines of the sweater. It's good with #1,4,&5, but a taller boot or a nude shoe would work well on 2 & 3. Thanks for all the pictures. Very nice!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Beryl--I agree about the shoe. Actually, one of the reasons I've held off on these photos is that I didn't have the oxford or t-strap brown shoes I wanted. But I've searched for these items for several months without any luck. I may have to break down and buy the nude shoes NEW. Another dent in my Hermes scarf budget.

  16. All the versions look elegant and lovely, but the last one with the red sweater is my favourite, I love the bright colour. The brocade waistcoat works beautifully too, stops the look being too neutral (for me, that is!)
I have yet to see you look anything other than immaculate, Terri - and after your marking marathon too, you're amazing! xxxxx

    1. Curtise--yes, after so many years of neutral colors, I'm surprised that #5 is the one I'll wear to campus. I need to figure out some other things to do with that vest. Ideas?

  17. That skirt is great and you've certainly found loads of ways to wear it. My internet connection is in serious trouble just now so I'm afraid I'm falling behind in my 'social networking', but will catch up as soon as I can. I see you've visited Old Navy, a shop that wasn't in prominence or in my locality when I last lived in the US. Looking forward to being 'better connected' again; thankfully I've blogged forward a bit so don't have to fight with that part just now. Computers....

    1. Shelley--I understand connection problems. I was furious when I discovered that DH switched from one type of service to another and for several days we went without. My livelihood depends on that signal. I know you'll be back soon. Are your connection problems related to remodeling?

    2. Terri - I'm ridiculously paranoid about announcing I'm out of town when we're away...like anyone would stalk little old me. On the other hand, I do think it's foolish to advertise this fact, especially when away for 6 weeks straight. My sister-in-law's internet connection was marginally better than dial-up and she had loads going on and needed to access her email, so I tried to stay out of her way. Also, her broadband account only allowed so much data download per month, a concept I've not encountered before. Life in Sydney is very expensive! I'm glad to be home.

  18. What a versatile skirt, my favourite is look no. 2 with the brocade vest - and nicely coined phrase "winter waist" - at the moment I'm sporting one of those too!

    1. My "winter waist" will disappear by May or so if I am just patient about it. I suppose I could hurry it up a bit with some exercise, but don't know when I would squeeze that into my teaching and grandmother responsibilities.

  19. by far my favorite mix is look number two- the blue/brown jacket top looks incredibly chic with the long pencil skirt. Which I wish I could wear more often as it's got such a timeless appeal- alas, the pencil skirt hobble when riding a bike or walking doesn't become me. But the look is so chic.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Bella--I like that vest too and was curious to see how a cropped top like that would work with a more fitted skirt. This skirt does hobble a bit...but then my work doesn't usually involve a lot of running.

I wonder if you know about Plato's Closet. It's a consignment shop at 135th and Quivira. It's geared toward the teens but still there are great purses, shoes, jewelry, bling jeans and interesting casual clothes. Another place I haven't seen you mention is Forever 21. It's reasonably priced and has some really pretty things in all sorts of styles. I would group it into the Old Navy, Target category for prices and deals. I am headed there with my daughters today.
