Trinkets and Treasures~a Thank You.

Finals are upon me.  In the past week, I've awarded creativity awards, lit a fire under the print shop to get the campus literary magazine printed on time, begun to put the finishing touches on a collaborative novel written in the past 8 weeks, and collected work in all five of my classes.  Whew!

I cannot guarantee how "present" I'll be in the blogosphere this coming week as grading must come first.  What better time to show off the gifts I've received and owe belated thanks for than now.  In this first photo, I'm sporting a felted brooch made by Franca at Oranges & Apples that I won in a giveaway for her 1,000th post!  The tee I'm wearing is purple though that doesn't show well against the "We the People" print that hangs in our dining room.  That would be George Washington in the background.

And the brooch on the right is one I won from Arianne at Style Montreal Sud-Est.  It provided just the right finishing touch to an outfit I wore this past Tuesday and received many compliments on.  The jacket is sort of "Butte" knit, an item my mother recalls from her working days.  I found it in the vintage section of a local thrift for $3.99 and love how it wears like a sweater, but fits with the structure of a jacket.  Notice the rare appearance of my glasses!

And finally, the last garment is one I lusted after so shamelessly that Curtise at the Secondhand Years simply sent it to me!  The dress reminded me of a 50s cocktail dress I had located in a costume shop years ago--with big white off the shoulder pouffy sleeves.  When I went back to get it, prior to a cruise several years ago, it was gone and I was so disappointed.  Few occasions in my life ever call for a true cocktail dress, but DH took one look and this and said we would FIND somewhere to go.

My hair is up in a curly French roll after the awards banquet last Sunday.  I've borrowed my daughter's red "Dorothy" shoes, but I am in serious need of some foundation advice.  Do they make undergarments that come this low in back and provide the girls a lift?

Of all of the rewards of blogging, the circle of friendships that develop over time is the most precious.  So, Franca, Arianne, and Curtise, my deepest appreciation from the bottom of my busy heart.

  1. Aren't you the lucky one?! I know it's too fancy for most Mexican places, but that is such a great dress to post on Cinco do Mayo.
Is that cute pin a seal? I love it. And the flower one is so stylish.

    1. Beryl--There are a couple of upscale Mexican places in KC, but we didn't get our act together for Cinco de Mayo. And, yes, the brooch from Ariane is a seal.

  2. Don't you just LOVE Curtise to bits?? I am sooooooo happy she gifted you this gorgeous frock - you look so amazing and ready to party after grading all those damn papers - heck you've been busy and a collaborative novel? Woohoo!!! Thank you for your prayers for The Phoenix, I think he has a lot of people on his side sending out kind thoughts as he's doing so well this past week:)) Big hugs to you my friend and glad you loved pic #4;)) xoxo

I think my favourite outfit here is the first one you have posted; that little Aline dress is utterly cute and shows off your gorgeous legs so well.
God luck with the busy week! and also with the laundering of your dryclean only dress. I'm positive it will turn out just fine :) Let me know!

    1. Carolyn--I'm glad you like the first outfit. It is one of my favorite teaching looks--as the dress is roomy and allows for free movement, but I always fear that it looks either like a maternity dress or a school girl's jumper. It's in the donate pile now.

  5. This post shows the many faces of Terri! Pretty and casual in the trapeze dress, resplendent and elegant in that great red knit blazer, then wow! Ready to party and shake a maracca (spelling?) or two! You were right about that dress fitting you perfectly, and I can quite understand DH's enthusiasm! You look stunning.
As regards a bra - I think you can get a style that has very low crossover straps at the back for wearing with styles like this. Or do those stick-on cup things work? They don't on me (too much to handle!) but might do the trick if the cup doesn't overfloweth...
I'm sure one of your readers will know the answer!
You sound so busy, but fulfilled and happy too, and I hope DH and you find a suitable place to go and give the frock an outing. xxxx

    1. Curtise--I could not have carried this off without you! So many thanks!!!

I need to investigate this bra for this and one other dress I've never worn on the blog. Have never tried the stick on cups, although I'm sure DH would have a lovely time with them.

Brooches are so nice on you. I like them for myself too.
And indeed, the cocktail dress needs no jewelry, with the great decorations on the shoulders. Your hair is very nice in the picture too. There are suitable bras for dresses like the one you have on, I´m sure.
A busy week ahead indeed, hoping that you´ll manage it : )!! Strength!!

Not sure about the foundation support other then the cups that are held on with stickers. But I'm not so sure how supportive that would be. Maybe you could have something sewn in? Great party dress!

    1. Joni--have you ever tried the sticker supports? I can't imagine how supportive they would be without straps.

  20. I love both the red jacket and the cocktail dress. I could definitely find a place in my wardrobe for a sweater-like jacket like that. And the cocktail dress is just fun with those flowery straps. They do have some stick-on bras or low-back bras, but neither are very good if you need a lot of support.

    1. Jacqueline--I will likely get more wear out of the red jacket, but the dress is one of those fun pieces. I am comfortable with some support, although my partner loves it when I go without. I think I'm getting a bit too old to get away with that.

    1. Emily--there's a long story associated with that large print. It is an iconic "We the People" print which DH salvaged from work he did on a local federal building. He came bringing it home in a rainstorm and then "surprised" me with it. It covers the entire wall.

  26. I've seen sort of corset/bodysuit looking contraptions before that go very low in the back and then come up and are strapless as well as low back. I have very small ladies myself though so usually support (or lack of) is not a problem. The dress is really fun though, sort of central american perhaps. I love the other two outfits as well!

    1. Melanie--I'm always a bit shy of talking about school projects as I sometimes feel liking I'm walking a tightrope between my professional and personal lives. The school's social media policy is a bit murky and I like to err on the side of caution. Basically 7 students in a learning community wrote a novel based upon a set of 24 characters they created from two cultures that have come into contact. One culture controls the other for their personal amusement...

  38. Terri how fabulous you received all of these things free :)
I have to say that I like every one of them and how you have styled them according to your taste -
Your dress on "We the People" is a shape I do not recall seeing on you before and it fits beautifully.
I have a small collection of pins that for some reason I forget to wear. The pin on the beautiful fitted red cardi/jacket gives it a preppy look and your cocktail dress I would wear in a heartbeat.
That cocktail dress is stunning and so are you wearing it --- i do hope you find a place to go and show that beauty off.

  40. Savvy--I guess it is a trapeze though I've just always thought of the dress as a "jumper" and have never worn it on the blog because I've worried it looks like a maternity dress. Comfortable, BUT. I agree that the dress Curtise sent IS a knockout.
