Visible Monday: Celebrating Moms!

Here's hoping that everyone had the best possible Mother's Day.  My own mother, whether she thinks of herself this way or not, is the matriarch of a sprawling brood of 4 children, 12 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren.  Trying to find a time to celebrate appropriately and coordinate everyone's schedules grows more and more challenging as the years go by.  Here we are at the doors of the Gaslight Grill heading in for the evening meal and live New Orleans jazz provided by Lynn Zimmer.

Several prime ribs and a pistachio encrusted salmon steak later, we convened at my daughter P.'s home for dessert and coffee. The day had begun with wet hair and a walk around the block with Mia, the pygmy goat we gave the grandson for Easter.  We received a "certified letter" this week from the city fathers who this time decided to enforce the city ordinance against "livestock."  So this walk was a poignant one as "Mia" nibbled all her favorite leaves in the neighbor's yards and sampled a mum on our deck.

You may or may not be able to tell from this photo, but her horns are about an inch long now.  Our grandson stands to loose his first tooth sometime this week so both the tooth fairy and other house guests are expected to arrive before the end of the week.  My grades are due in Thursday and I walk in graduation that evening.  And the house has not been cleaned in...months.  Yikes!

I'm not complaining.  My daughter M. worked on Mother's Day, took time out for dessert, and then resumed studying for her finals.  I sometimes think we need a separate day to celebrate the single mothers of the world who often do the job of two...for a votive candle in a painted baby food jar and a lima bean planted in a paper cup.

So here is to the unsung heroines in our lives.

This post is part of Visible Monday, a weekly round-up of women who choose to be visible sponsored by Patti at Not Dead Yet Style.  Come join the fun.

    1. Desiree--Yes, I have an entire box full of such gifts I've saved over the years. Christmas ornaments made of popisicle sticks and imprints of small hands and dangling earrings with plastic football helmets on them...

  3. I'll join you in that toast; yourself being amongst said unsung heroines in your family's lives. It sounds like a very lovely Mother's Day, in that you did get to spend time with the important people in your life. And those kinds of handmade gifts by my children are my most treasured!

PS. Does this mean you can't keep your little goat? xxx

    1. Curtise--yes, our little goat will have to go back to the farm she came from sometime this week. We have spoiled her so much that I hope the rest of the herd will accept her...they won't believe the stories she'll have to tell.

  7. Terri - You are so lucky to still have your Mom and to have daughters and grandkids. I envy you all that family. What will happen to the cute little goat?

    1. Shelley--Yes, I know that I'm LUCKY to have my mother, as well as our combined broods. The little goat will go back to the farm she came from. I only hope that she's accepted, now that she's been a "city" goat for a bit.

    1. Patti--Mia is not just inquisitive, but hungry all the time as well. Her favorite would be elm leaves, but she nibbles wilted roses like candy.

I have to admit that I feel like I failed in my filial duty, as I completely forgot about Mothers' Day. In my defense, it doesn't fall on the same date in Spain, so I didn't have any visible reminders around this weekend.

Love your description of the votive candle in the baby food jar.
My Mother's Day was spent stuck in a parking garage waiting on a tow truck. Yuck!

    1. Joni--Sadly, our goat must GO. A tow truck is no kind of mother's day gift. What happened?

    1. Jesse--the goat will return to the farmer we "rented" her from. We've had a number of goats over the years and the ordinance had not been previously enforced. In our minds, a goat is less trouble than a dog.

  16. Sounds like a great day.

Back in the day, when I still practiced law, zoning law was a specialty of mine. I can only imagine how your local code is worded. Sorry!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. April--It was a good day. Our frustration with the zoning law is that it is applied somewhat unevenly. The ordinance says that we need a minimum of three acres to keep a goat. We have just two city lots...

  17. Happy -late- Mother's day - here we celebrate in December.
What are you going to do about the goat ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Lorena--I'm gathering that Mother's Day occurs at different times of year in different places. We will return the goat...in her somewhat "spoiled" condition. She's been pretty privileged at our house and had no 'pecking order' of the herd to contend with.

  18. What a lovely post! There's so much to love about this; your mom, your family, that pygmy goat, and I very much like your specs.

(My own mother mistakenly told me that the previous Sunday was Mother's Day -- it's in March, here -- so she got her call and gift a week early.)

    1. Ana--thank you. I'm due for a new pair of specs. Are you sure your mother was "mistaken" or just planning early to be sure that you remembered.

Do you know what my mother wanted for a gift? Floral Doc Martens!
