They say it's my birthday...the big 5-8! And all I can think about is how behind on Megan Mae's challenge I am. Tuesday's challenge was 'platforms or flats'. I don't own a pair of platforms (unless clogs count). So I hope that this barefoot bohemian look counts.
Actually, I sampled this look weeks ago after I'd noticed Lynne wearing a reversible silk skirt and I thought of it again when Patti wore one on Monday. Here, I'm combining two--with one fashioned as a top. I know when I purchased my first one off of eBay (the bottom one), it came with a video that showed the 101 ways it could be styled as a dress. I'm wearing the original as a skirt and the most recent thrift store find as a top. I've added brass bells around one ankle--an accessory my grandson loved as it announced my movements about the house. I'm told that these skirts are fashioned from recycled saris.
I like the bohemian vibe of this look and if women my age still attended outdoor concerts I could easily wear it out into the world--though I should probably leave the wrist watch at home. I actually sampled the top with this curious pair of metallic flats.
Wednesday's challenge was tribal or floral. I don't own any "tribal" (and Jacqueline at The Hourglass Files has an excellent take on this) and I wear florals infrequently because of a personal connotations I attach to them. They remind me of a "church lady" look I actually wore on Sundays throughout the 80s. But, this look highlights two more of the pieces I found when I visited the Goodwill Outlet store several weeks ago.
The floral blouse is by Ralph Lauren and the gathered skirt is by Campagnie Internationale. The pale colors are unfortunate against my pale skin and greying hair, but I like the profile of the look. I've collected three of these gathered skirts in my thrifting over the past year.
I still have classes to tend to today and only then, will we think about how we might celebrate this birthday...
Does anyone have suggestions?
Happy birthday, Terri! I like the paisley skirt/top (skop?) and the metallic pumps and I'm all for going to outdoor concerts at any age, so long as it's not raining.
ReplyDeleteThat's Not My Age--Love the new word, skop!
DeleteHappy birthday! I hope you have a wonderful day. I love your summery floral and bohemian looks!
ReplyDeleteShea--thank you for the birthday wishes. Looks like I'm gonna get to meet you on the 28th!
DeleteWell, before anything else--HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Terri!! Hope it is full of laughter and cake!
ReplyDeleteLove the skirt. And the shoes are fascinating. Way cool!
April--As I told you in the e-mail, I'm just so touched that you remembered. I realized yesterday that I share my birthday with the Olsen Twins!
DeleteHappy Birthday, Terri! this is the best outfit ever. I used to buy those skirts in India, sell them on eBay and make enough money to return! The ankle bracelet is lovely and totally in-keeping with the tribal theme.
ReplyDeleteWomen of much more advanced years than a mere fifty-something go to outdoor concerts. I've met the coolest ladies in their late 70s camping at Glastonbury.
How to celebrate? Pitch a tent in your garden, have a campfire, good wine and food, strum a guitar and spend a summer's night under the stars. xxx
Vix--I wonder if I purchased my first skirt from you! Hm, I may have to go to Glastonbury one year...
DeleteHappy Birthday to you, Terri!! That top pic looks perfect for a summer gathering.
ReplyDeleteDejaPseu--thank you for the birthday wishes!
DeleteI absolutely agree with Vix - best outfit ever. And her idea to celebrate is perfect. Also, you could wear this outfit out for dinner, something curry perhaps? Anything really. Those metallic flats would work or even flip-flops. Hop in that old truck with DH and hit a country road with the radio or favourite CD blasting on high volume and the windows rolled down, then write a poem for yourself under a tree. Happy Birthday!!!
ReplyDeleteMelanie--yum to the curry. I'd likely wear flip-flops if I was going out in the pair of skirts. It would have been cool to go "parking" in our old truck.
DeleteI love the flow of the two skirts you are wearing in the first outfit. It seems so perfect for the summertime.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday!
Raquelita--It is a perfect summertime look and the breeze catches those silk layers nicely.
DeleteYou look fabulous for 58!! So gorgeous...have a happy, happy birthday! I love those pointy toed gold shoes...very cool!! Make sure you do something special for yourself today!
ReplyDeleteOh, Pam, this means a lot to me. The most special thing I did was take a nap and FINISH reading one of the many books I've started recently. But, on Kitty's suggestion, I'm going to spread my birthday out over several days.
DeleteAww Happy Birthday!
ReplyDeleteYou look so marvelous in that first outfit. Very free and breezy. I do think clogs count as a platform because your toes are lifted off the ground imo. Keely wore clog-like shoes for her day.
Full skirts are awesome! I've been wearing them almost every day I can since it got warm. I don't own any tribal-like print, and only own one thing with actual flowers on it. Everything else is mod-like, geometric, abstract, or plaid. I'm not really a prints girl.
MeganMae--It didn't even occur to me that clogs could be platforms as I included that look to satisfy the requirements for the third day. As for full skirts, I've worn them many days this summer, but I prefer a pencil skirt in the fall.
DeleteHave a very happy birthday! You look like a bona fide free-loving bohemian in the first ensemble. And thanks for the link to my post!
ReplyDeleteJacqueline--It was a happy birthday. And your blog deserves the links. I wish I knew more about fashion history...which is why I return time and again.
DeleteThank you so much for such a lovely compliment. It is such a pleasure having you read.
DeleteHappy Birthday! I love both outfits, and the photos are lovely :)
ReplyDeleteI always love going out for breakfast on my birthday, but it's probably too late for that :)
Catie--I suspect we'll be going out for a big breakfast for Father's Day! It's the least expensive of the meals...when we entertain our crew.
DeleteI think you should do 58 things you love, or have never done. Make a list and go for it!! I wonder what that list would look like?
ReplyDeleteYou look wonderful in your hippie concert ensemble. The top would look great with leggings and those cool shoes too.
Have a great birthday week!!
Joni--It would be an interesting exercise to come up with 58 things I've never done...I'll share the list with you when I've written it. I'll have to try the top with some leggings, a garment my DH loves.
DeleteHappy Birthday Terri! I love both the looks, especially the boho look :-)
ReplyDeleteKi--thank you for the birthday wishes!
DeleteHappy, happy birthday, Terri! I hope you have a terrific day today and figure out something fun to do to celebrate. Love the metallic shoes with the print dress...
ReplyDeleteWhat's something you really enjoy doing but haven't had a chance to do for a while? Maybe take advantage of a special occasion to go do that...
Elly--We'll see how I figure out how to wear the metallic shoes in the future. I actually READ a book, SHOCKING by Schiaperelli. Enjoyed it very much.
DeleteHappy Birthday Terri! Oh yes, I DO have a suggestion for celebrations, champagne and cake with loved ones and then treating yourself to an Hermes scarf! I love the gold shoes, perfect for your birthday and with an art deco feel too (you know I have Gatsby on the brain!). Cheers to you my dear! XO, Jill
ReplyDeleteJill--I love the Hermes idea the BEST of all. I thrifted the shoes for the very reason you mention. They ARE art deco.
DeleteHappy Birthday - I hope I look as fabulous at 58.
ReplyDeleteMy perfect birthday celebration would be:
a break from cooking, cleaning, shopping, washing, tidying.
It would involve a long soak in the bath, sharing a meal (that I haven't cooked) with a loved one(s) and a great film with a large glass of my favourite red wine to end the day
Jane--break from cooking, cleaning, shopping, washing, tidying--CHeck. The long soak sounds lovely, but I don't think we have a drop of wine in the house.
DeleteI'd celebrate with absolutely no cooking by me.
ReplyDeleteI think you need to spring for an outdoor concert this season. Ladies our age do go to them. Thankfully they've mostly mellowed and keep their shirts on.
Rose--I did NOT cook at all on my birthday! I think our last outdoor concert was to see Bob Dylan, nearly 12 years ago! Yikes!
Deletehappy birthday, terri! i'd say a spontaneous dinner picnic at the park if weather permits!
ReplyDeletewhatever you do, take a few moments to just relax :)
oomph--the weather would have permitted, but I "relaxed" instead. Read n-a-p!!
DeleteI agree that you look fantastic at 58. I'm coming up a few steps behind you - so don't give up now!
ReplyDeleteOne year, I celebrated my birthday for about two weeks. It was the best! Everything I came across, I told myself, "Well, that will be part of my birthday!" and it just kept going.
I think I'll plan that one again for this year!
Kitty--I shared the two-week celebration idea with DH this morning...and today I received a stand-up steamer!! I'm pleased about that.
DeleteHappy Birthday, beautiful!
ReplyDeleteCelebration: prosecco, fresh fruit, lovely cheese, and anything else your heart desires.
Kelly--I love the celebration you describe...
DeleteHappy birthday!! I adore the first outfit (of course, being me) and you remind me to pull out my beautiful jingly ankle bracelet!! I think you look gorgeous. The second outfit is not to my taste, but I can appreciate the practicality of it.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful week!!
Jean--How long has it been since you've worn your ankle bracelet? The second look is more typical of me, but I've not forgotten looks I tried when I was young.
DeleteHappy, happy birthday, Terri! We are so close in our birthdays. Thanks for turning me on the all the options of the wrap skirt -- I found the video/s and got lots of ideas -- and you look fabulous in this one. To celebrate - whatever strikes you as fun, indulgent and delicious : >
ReplyDeletePatti--have fun with the skirt! We tried it at a family get-together and everyone styled it differently, including the men in the family.
DeleteI hope you've had a wonderful day -- Happy Birthday!
ReplyDeleteMater--It was a wonderful day...though I wish I could take a "personal day" for my birthday.
DeleteHappy Birthday Terri! How about getting a massage. That always feels so good.
ReplyDeleteThe Bohemian look is great on you. The long over long works well.
StyleAgent--A massage is a great idea and even though the birthday has passed I may just suggest it to someone I know.
DeleteYou are rocking the bohemian vibe and looking better than great for 58 ...that was cheesy I know. Oh Birthdays how exciting eat something divine and wear something that makes you feel beautiful! Be with people you love and be in the moment! Happy 58 sweet lady!
ReplyDeleteXXOO
Krista
Krista--You're such a sweetheart. I did spend the day with people I love...and there were hugs and phone calls and presents, but no cake.
DeleteHappy Birthday Terri! Your hair looks so beautiful in the photo of wearing the floral blouse. I hope as I am typing this you are already relaxing and celebrating with DH. But if you're like us you'll probably just throw something on the barbeque!
ReplyDeleteSusan--We should have barbecued. We haven't fired up the grill all summer!
DeleteHappy, Happy Birthday. Hope you and DH get to do something fun, or just relax if that is what you prefer!
ReplyDeleteLinda--DH and I have had PLENTY of fun in recent days...and I ended up taking a nap!!
DeleteHappy Birthday, Woman! Love the recycled-sari-stylz, and love how well you wear 58. May we all do so with such style and beauty!
ReplyDeleteA-Dubs--Thank you for the birthday wishes!
DeleteHappy Birthday, Terri!
ReplyDeleteI love that first outfit; you look absolutely, enviably amazing.
What ever you end up doing for your birthday, I hope its fabulous!
Gracey--Perhaps I need to do more bohemian looks!
DeleteHappy Birthday, Terri! I hope you find a fun way to celebrate :)
ReplyDeleteWow, two very different looks here! That's probably one of the fun things about these challenges, right? I love the gathered skirt - good call snatching a few of those up!
Anne--I know the looks are very different. Have to keep my readers guessing and yes, challenges are great for that.
DeleteHappy birthday darling woman! It's a treat to see you looking so resplendent in your sari-fabric skirts - I think this is one of my favourite looks on you - not many can pull this one off but this is a winner! Do a twirl for me and eat cake!! xo
ReplyDeleteDesiree--I'm working up to bloomers and Black Milk leggings! My birthday passed without a single bite of cake! Yikes!
DeleteHappy Birthday Terri! I hope you have a great celebration! I think that first dress is so very fun, it looks marvelous on you!
ReplyDeleteMeri--the first look is uh, "uncharacteristic," but birthdays call for a challenge to the same old...
DeleteDamn, Terri, you are smokin' 58! That picture of you in the reversible dress is utterly gorgeous! Happy belated birthday!
ReplyDeleteP.S. I don't think *my* skirt does that :(
Lynne--ah, shucks. Sometimes I wonder how much longer I'll keep style blogging and then you go and say something like it. Have you tried your skirt as a dress?
DeleteHappy Birthday Sis! You are looking great! Love, B
ReplyDeleteOh, hey, fellow Gemini, we're not the same age anymore!
DeleteHappy Birthday Terri! You look beautiful in the sari-skirt-top outfit. So free and unencumbered.
ReplyDeleteNarda--Once the classes were updated...I was free and unencumbered. It was a good birthday.
DeleteI love both looks, but I'm an old hippie so the first one really speaks to me. And, it's your birthday today so dress anyway you like, and do take your watch off so you don't know when the party is over. :-)) Happy birthday!
ReplyDeleteDiane--So that makes two old hippies. I think the wristwatch reveals so much about my age...the youngsters substitute cell phones.
DeleteHappy Birthday. The first outfit is so creative and quite lovely. I have an ankle bracelet full of bells (from the 60's/70's) that I now want to go dig out of the box of unworn jewelry.
ReplyDeleteHave a piece of birthday cake for me!
Darla
Darla--I hope you find your ankle bracelet. I have a pair of them and I'm willing to part with one...in case you don't find yours.
DeleteHappy Birthday! I love the boho vibe of the first look. I would NEVER guess that you were 58. I hope I look as good as you do at 58!
ReplyDeleteJulie
Julie--I suspect that my age in more noticeable in real life, but I do not just want to gently fade away!
DeleteHappy birthday Terri!!
ReplyDeleteI love the "hippy" vibe of your first outfit--it's stunning!
I like the second outfit, too. i'm not much of a floral gal either unless it's bright and bold.
Menopausal--I was on the tail end of the original hippies, but close enough that I have vivid memories of the look.
DeleteHappy Birthday! I like your saree skirt. The bells around the ankle is also popular in India, so this is a great homage to Indian clothing!
ReplyDeleteKathleen--I love the way silk feels and moves when I'm outdoors. And, like my grandson, I love the bells too.
DeleteBeautiful and creative as always! A very happy birthday to you! I hope that you had a celebratory day and that your year brings much adventure and joy.
ReplyDeleteJudith--thank you! Living with DH ensures that my life is almost always adventurous.
Deletei'm diggin' the boho vibe of the first look, Terri...you couldn't have picked a better birthday outfit. and on that note - HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
ReplyDeleteand yes, women of all ages still attend outdoor concerts..it all depends on the genre of music you're into.
MissDonna--Welcome to Rags! And thank you for your encouraging words...my last concert would have been Stevie Nicks.
DeleteThe Happiest Birthday ever to You!!!
ReplyDeleteHow beautifully the golden shoes match with the dress.
Wishing you an adventurous day: )!
Mette--Thank you for the birthday wishes. The golden shoes will be making future appearances with quite a number of "gold" looks...
DeleteLove the simple skirt and floral blouse. Have a wonderful Birthday!
ReplyDeleteStyleMentor--thank you! I think the skirt and blouse is somehow a "classic" look.
Deletehappy birthday, beautiful lady!! you always look so classic and well put together. the flowy/layered/boho vibe is unexpected but so awesome on you!
ReplyDeletePaige--oh, you're gonna make me cry! I agree that bohemian is unexpected.
DeleteHappy happy birthday Terri! You look utterly amazing as a silk swathed bohemian lady in that first photo and I love the gold shoes! I hope you had a wonderful day xx
ReplyDeleteVeshoevius--the day AFTER my birthday has been better! And thank you!
DeleteHope your birthday was wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI love your barefoot bohemian outfit soooo much!! Really beautiful!
Jeannie--it was sedate and just what I needed!
DeleteI hope you had a lovely birthday, and love the silk skirt and the gorgeous metallic flats.
ReplyDeleteLemons--Welcome to Rags! And thank you.
DeleteBelated happy birthday from Luxembourg!!! Hope you had a lovely day. You look incredible! And loving those gorgeous metallic pumps. x
ReplyDeleteComtesse--Ah, thank you. I like the pumps too. Now, get back to that husband of yours.
DeleteHappy Birthday terri! Hope you've had a lovely week. The sari skirts outfit is absolutely my fave outfit on you ever! Sarah xxx
ReplyDeleteSarah--thanks for the birthday wishes. Yep, this old dog still has a new trick or two left.
DeleteTerry - Hope you had a lovely birthday! I had a nice steak dinner and some red wine on mine a couple of weeks ago. I love the sari skirts - but with your waistline I'm sure you need to belt that top. I'm thinking metallic sandals would complete the look - surely you could find an outdoor festival to attend? Do you get any time off during the summers? It's the only advantage I can think of these days to teaching, as worthy as the occupation is, there are so many downsides. Anyhow. I hope you had a great birthday - and many more!
ReplyDeleteShelley--I probably would have to belt that top if we were at an outdoor festival. I will have a few weeks off during the first of August...but we have no plans yet.
DeleteTerri, I hope you had a wonderful birthday, however you chose to celebrate! I love the boho outfit with the two skirts--it is a perfect outfit to wear to an outdoor festival, which women "of a certain age" do attend, I assure you. We have a World music festival and a Folk Music Festival here in July, and a lot of the crowd is over 50. By the way, I am in London, Ontario, not London, UK, so in answer to your question re: the falcon, I don't know whether you need a license for a falcon or not. The one on my blog was from a wildlfe rehabilitation center so I don't think they would need one.
ReplyDeleteAh, thank you for the clarification! Here in Kansas, we have many hawks (they like to eat the pigeons we keep) and you ARE required to have special permits to handle them. I have read interesting accounts of how hawks/falcons have been used for hunting and in warfare.
DeleteOh... i know I am late, but i sure hope you had a good one :)
ReplyDeleteI would have never guessed you were even close to 58!
I have never really understood the one dress worn 101 ways thingy - hopefully you can enlighten us.
By the time I type this it is a Happy Belated Birthday to you, dear Terri. I LOVE the 2 skirts outfit. The mix patterns and the lovely tan silky look of the top looking wonderful on you- this sort of colors suit you. The second outfit, which bespeaks a traditionalist streak in you in good, I agree the outline is good, but the stark white is a bit too squeaky clean for my taste.
ReplyDeleteI hope you wear that boho number just out and about- no need for an outdoor music festival!
Happy birthday and never mind what they say about age. It's just an information.I can picture you in this outfit on a lovely beach in Goa India.
ReplyDeleteHave a very happy birthday! And I like your long hair:).
ReplyDeleteThe double skirt look is fantastic! One would think that a full skirt over a full skirt would be too much fabric, but not in this case! The ankle bracelet is icing on the cake. Any event would be a festival with that look, your b-day especially! Happy happy, fellow Gemini!
ReplyDeleteHappy Belated Birthday Amorcito!
ReplyDeleteI love the double layering of your skirt is amazing.
ankle bracelet stands out..so pretty.
You could wear this all the time the cut and color totally suits you.
Besios
Happy birthday! Love the boho look on you!
ReplyDeleteA very belated happy birthday to you!
ReplyDeleteI adore the top look - so fresh and just gorgeous :)
