Six Items Challenge: A Second Wind

First, a thank you to all my faithful readers and fans who encouraged me in my last post when I was down, down, down.  The end of the challenge is within sight now--Monday.  As promised, I wanted to begin with the stylings of the "Joni James" shawl.

First, please ignore the difference between the "tan" on my upper body and that below in the look on the left.  I wore a black strapless bra, simply wrapped the shawl around and tucked into the bra and then belted, adding souvenir beads from youngest daughter's wedding and oldest daughter's ruby slippers.  In a pinch, this ensemble could do.  In practice, I wore the look on the right for about half a day until I was obliged to make a mad dash to the grocery store when I belatedly remembered that the County Fair parade was that night.  I wore the white skirt to the grocery.

Our home sits on the main route and this generally means that all sorts of family, friends, and former tenants stop by for the great view and whatever food we might have to offer.  I was scrambling but had time to BUY fried chicken by the bucket, a macaroni salad, a mixed melon salad.  I made a huge batch of fresh salsa and added various other chip condiments and a huge pitcher of lemonade.  It is a wonder that the white skirt was not stained by all the cutting and chopping.   The day had been so warm (110 degrees) that my guests opted to eat BEFORE the parade rather than after as I had planned.  I never did get to put on the bit of "costume" I'd planned.

The boots, the belt and the hat are all items that DH bought for me years ago and while I often wear the boots and the belt, the hat has very seldom seen the light of day.  I've cocked it at a funny angle for dramatic effect in this photo.

Below is the kind of thing that you'll see in small town parades, minus the politicians, the Shriners, and the Boy Scouts.

That night, it rained!  Blessed, glorious rain and I was inspired to pull out this umbrella I acquired at an auction in early June.  Notice the remains of a small puddle in the photo.

For most of Thursday, I simply wore the black tee and slacks as we thrift-shopped a bit, the calm before a different kind of storm.  My classes officially ended at midnight that night and the flurry of grading finals began.  This is what I wore on Friday to camp in front of my computer, grading, grading, grading.

I'm wearing button flowers I won in Megan Mae Daily's recent giveaway!  Aren't they pretty?  They were a great pick-me-up after my last post.

I didn't snap the photo until LATE in the day after I'd graded an entire stack of papers on Ibsen's A Doll House.  I've artfully covered my tired, tired face and to please Beryl, I'm wearing Libby Edelman orange platform sandals rather than the flip-flops I've worn in solidarity with poor women most of the month.

I have one more stack of papers to grade and THEN, come Monday I'll be a free woman for three entire weeks!

  1. My gosh, I am SO impressed at how you are getting so many looks from these few garments, just by adding accessories. The idea to use a shawl as a top is genius. I hope you do a roundup post, with all you pictures together at the end... :)

    1. Carolyn--Yes, I think I've discovered the power of accessories, although in real life they often seem to me like fussy little extras. And yes, I will do a round-up post.

  2. Oh Terri, aren't you sweet? It is my birthday, after all. But seriously, those orange sandals are great and really kick that outfit up a notch. I liked the cowboy boots, too. I didn't realize your flip flop wearing had a purpose. (Maybe I haven't been reading carefully enough.)

    1. Beryl--Actually, I don't think I've mentioned the flip-flop wearing during this challenge, although one of my earliest posts was an entire post on the history of flip-flops...and I why I like them.

  3. The cowgirl look is adorable! Too bad it didn't get worn to the parade. Small town parades are a hoot.

Also omg! I love the buttonflowers with this look! It really does jazz up your basics, as do those incredible sandals.

Wishing you the best of luck tackling those papers. Enjoy your time off!

    1. MeganMae--Yes, the cowgirl look would fit right in with local styling and points further west. I suspect it only looks like a "costume" to eastern eyes. I was very pleased with the bright colors of the button flowers.

  4. I adore the photo of you in that cowboy hat!! I've looked at it over and over again, it's fantastic.
Can I stop by for a meal too? I bet it would be a ton of fun. ;)

    2. Oh WOW!! I will LOVE it and wear it over and over again. I'm so honored!!
I've been thinking of something I'm going to make you once i get my wholesaled t-shirts in. I'm still waiting on my resellers permit and it's taking forever. I think about you every time I see anything that says "Rage Against the Machine" on it. Which lately has been quite often since my son loves to shop at Hot Topics. ;)

  7. You REALLY suit that hat, Terri! Love what you did with the shawl, and those bright little brooches and orange shoes can't help but make you feel cheerful, as you get to the end of your challenge. You manage all the demands on your time and creativity with great aplomb! xxx

    1. Curtise--I love the orange sandals, but they are too big for my feet...and I actually bought them for a different reasons. If you could see my housekeeping, I doubt you would think I manage my time especially well. When you have children in the household, it never looks tidy--as you well know.

  10. Boot and hat! I think you should wear it often and always cocked to one side. It adds personality to the outfit. Just have fun with clothing... that's what it's all about, and you do it well. :-)

    1. Diane--Having FUN with clothing is mostly what Rags is all about. In real life, I'm pretty unremarkable!

  11. The shawl as skirt is nice but I can see why the short white skirt was your go-to-the-grocery-store choice.

Those button pins are cute. Having full choice of accessories is a plus with this challenge.

    You've done an admirable job!

    1. Rose--One mis-step in the shawl as skirt and the whole thing might have fallen off--not what you want to have happen at the grocery store. I've been pondering a way to better organize my accessories.

  12. You are doing such a great job, Terri! The reason I do not do challenges like this is because they would drive me insane! You do them so well. 1. Mater--the only other time I wore the hat was to a department Halloween party. I received strange looks from my colleagues, so even within local style there are sub-groups and boundaries.

  15. The tan on my upper body and lower body is definitely disproportionate, but I've decided that's a sign of a life well lived. Or at least a life lived while often wearing pants.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. His-girl-friday--I had never noticed the imbalance in my tan until I snapped this photo, but it's true that I haven't worked on keeping it even this summer. Instead, I've mostly tried to evade the intense sun we've had.

  16. You look so cute in the cow girl outfit! The Joni James scarf with the black top is great too. The ruby slippers aren't too bad either - how long can keep them?

Last night I saw on the news, that "experts" now recommend that you buy clothes made buy children in the third world enabling them to help support their family! No mentioning of paying the adults a fair salary so the children's help isn't needed!

I was only eighteen years old when I worked at a sewing machine in a small factory. We made expensive silk dresses that were sold to rich Americans! We were a small team, and the owners worked just as hard as the rest of us - nothing at all like the present conditions in India, China, Vietnam, Cambodia...

A strong union was mainly responsible for our fair working conditions, the rest was due to the owners. But we do have very strong unions here. It begins at school were all children are introduced to the concept of a union, it's history, the role it takes in present day negotiations with the employers and the government, and the importance of solidarity. And in my opinion, real democracy is based on solidarity!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Kaffesoester--I've watched some BBC reports on children, say in India and probably Bangladesh, working in eye-opening conditions. The US went through a period of putting children to work in appalling conditions too, though it is against the law of the land now.

I'm just so curious about your experiences. How long did it take you to make a dress? Were you involved in cutting it out? Did it have to pass inspection?

I wish our American schools did a far better job about educating on unions. An American student is not likely to get this information until college!

      Delete
    2. I'm not sure how many dresses were finished per day, but as I recall we were a team of eight or ten people, and my best guess would be that we would make 30 to 40 dresses per day. We each did one part of the dress, one would sew in the zip, another would do the seaming and so on. We didn't sit two days at the same machine so there was a rotation system, preventing damages from doing the same movements repeatedly every day for years.

Every step was inspected - the quality was high priority. Cutting the fabric wasn't easy so they showed me how it was done but I never got to try it. And was relived that I didn't have to, I could have ruined a lot of expensive silk fabric! I remember that on my last day the owners gave my a rather expensive goodbye gift - they had been impressed with my effort and skills! So, I still have a beautiful amber and silver pendant to remind me of my days at the sewing machine!

  17. I really like the creation of a summer dress from a scarf, Terri, and the black topper makes it so versatile! And of course, the cowboy hat is the best accent ever. The temp - 110 degrees - sounds so draining even to us here in Florida. Hooray for the rain : >

    1. DamnGreenDRess--I have worn the boots and the belt to teach. And it would readily be appropriate at a rodeo. My husband is very accustomed to wearing his hats--to include cowboy style, but I rarely see cowboy hats on women in my area.

  20. Gosh, that hat so suits you! I have the world's slowest internet connection here in Beaune, but hopefully this comment will get through... Sorry to hear you've been down, but haven't yet read why. It's been very hot here at times - in the upper 90s - but it rained like anything last night and we're a bit damp here, but surviving. We'll be home in a few days and I've yet to wish to be home, so it has been a good holiday. I've tried escargot and lived to tell the tail (they are actually OK, but not much to them).

    Look forward to catching up!

  21. The scarf-looks are very, very pretty, but I have to say that I just LOVE the cowgirl assemble!

I don't know how you survive in 100-degree weather, I honestly don't! Is it at least dry heat? Our 85 degrees with high humidity is just horrible.

    1. TheWaves (when will I ever learn your name?)--the cowgirl ensemble is the most comfortable of all the looks pictured here. In fact, my cowboy boots are the best footwear for comfort in my closet. Yes, thankfully, it has been dry, rather than humid heat. When it is humid, my hair swells to twice its thickness.

  22. If I were there I'd hug you! I love what you did with that scarf.

That hat definitely needs to get out more :)

My daughter was a teaching assistant during her theater graduate program. One holiday, she read aloud from freshman theater papers she was grading - about The Dollhouse. Keep in mind these were students in one of the most competitive colleges in our state. They were so awful they were hilarious. One budding critic called the play "seat-edging"...not once, but repeatedly. Um, okay :p

    1. Oh, Lynne--sometimes I need hugs.

And, yes, sometimes the interpretations of the Doll House can be very eye-opening. It's always interesting to me how the male students see Nora as manipulative, while the female students see her as strong. I think it was an important play for its time.
