A belated Plaidurday Post Tartan

Some of my readers know that I've been taking a stab at selling on eBay.  I'm so new at it that I'm still in my "trial" period and making newby mistakes.  On the one hand I'm astounded at the money to be made on some items and dumb-founded at what doesn't sell.

I was so excited when I found this vintage pair of Hang Ten (a brand I wore in high school) high-waisted plaid pants.  The listing for them on eBay has come and gone with very little interest so I've decided to try styling them myself.  In the first photo above, I brought the rayon back to life with my steamer, added a simple black tee, and last season's heeled oxfords.  On my little finger, I'm wearing a ring that features a pair of googly eyes.

In this second styling, I've changed out the tee for a crisp black blouse (by Bitten) and added a blazer on the left.  I'm alarmed at how thin I'm looking and thinking it is about time for a hair cut.  My hair had been curled right before these photos, but my arms aren't long enough to reach the end of the strands!  And, I've nearly cut my feet off in many of the photos...evidence I haven't blogged in a month.

This third styling combines ALL of the plaids in my closet, in the spirit of mixing prints.  What do you think?  Too much?

The blouse/shirt is by Tommy Hilfiger and the bag is something I found at Goodwill.   The clogs were brand new at the Salvation Army.

And in this final look, I've covered up the Hilfiger shirt with a wool sweater by Gap.  You'll see that my hair caught a breeze, but I had no business adding a wool sweater with the humidity we've had the past several days.

The loafers are by Cole Haan.  Everything has been thrifted.

Serene, bless her heart, published the link to my eBay store today, so if you really can't wait to see what I've been up to until I'm officially open for business, go have a look at the Elegant Bohemian.

And, if you're interested in these size 10, true vintage tartan pants, the first one who claims them can have them.

  3. Woo hoo, I found your eBay store! Very nicely done, Terri. And I really like the ways you styled these trousers. The heeled oxfords look great to my eye too; I will be wearing mine soon.

    1. Patti--My store isn't actually a store (and probably won't be until next June). I'm still getting used to the heeled oxford. A part of me thinks they look like the school-teacher shoes my great Aunt Grace once wore.

  4. These pants are awesome Terri! You should keep them. They remind me of my grunge days in the 90s. I would have worn those puppies in a heartbeat with a Pearl Jam or Nirvana tee and my Doc Martens, lol. Heather

    1. Heather--I think I'm a little older than you and totally missed out on the Doc Marten trend (although my mother--my mother!--thinks she wants a pair of the floral ones). I do have a flannel shirt or two lurking in my closet, so I could do true grunge in a pinch.

  5. Bwa-ha-ha, that first photo is priceless, so that is my favourite styling. You look fantastic. I love these plaid trousers, especially with that high waist. Each look has a different vibe. I'm going over to your eBay store for a look.

  10. I love those trousers with either the oxfords or the loafers, somehow v. preppy. I think the black tops look the best, but black is a tough colour to wear. Maybe a grey scarf would help? Can't tell what other colours are in that plaid. Mom was a photographic painter back in the days before direct colour photography. She hated it when people wore plaid in photos! But I love that print, being one of the few that is timeless.

    1. Shelley--Yes, the loafers definitely render the look preppy--not quite my style. Oddly a scarf didn't even occur to me, probably because most of the time I agree with your mother--it's a lot going on.

  14. Glad to see you're back in the saddle again Terri. Love the plaid pants with the black shirt best. Maybe one reason they're a hard sell is that high waist - a toughie to wear for those carrying any extra poundage. Which-eek - would be me at the moment...

    1. Pat--I'm sure the high waist has something to do with it. I'd go on a Starbucks brownie binge with you any time. That wasn't very helpful, was it?

  16. Alright Terri, complete honesty here: these pants are FABULOUS on you! Seriously!! I LOVE the black blouse with them....and the flats with them just WORK! The hang, the length, the fit, all just perfect. I think that when I consider your style, this is kind of what I imagine. Masculine elements femininzed with accessories and your personality....definitely an Annie Hall feel. I'd put those bad boys back on eBay with these pictures in the description. I would have walked right by those, but seeing them on you makes them come alive! Big hug to you my friend and thanks so much for the mention!! Serene

    Replies
    1. Serene--I agree that I do usually have a masculine element in many of my looks. Your mention of Annie Hall made me remember my polka dot suspenders. I could have used those in this look. I think the problem is with my headings and you're coaching me well on that.

  17. I love them with the black tops! These are strongly reminiscent to me of the Bay City Rollers style, a rock band with a "look" which was enormously popular here *just* before I became an age interested in fashion :)

  21. My two favorite looks are the plaids all together, and the last one with the sweater and loafers. I didn't know you have branched out onto eBay! That's amazing! I can't wait to learn more about it. I am sorry I have been MIA this month. Between getting a new cat (Tippi) and trying to get my son into middle school in NYC (he might as well be applying to Harvard, I'm not even kidding), it has been impossible to do much of anything else. Adrienne and I are focusing on hats for November. Do you ever wear them? You can send me a picture by Nov. 1 if you want to join us for 'How I Wear My: Hat.' We'd love to have you again. I hope you are well. I have missed you! XO, Jill

    1. Jill--I'm simply experimenting with eBay, but I've had some success. Yes, to a new cat. Who knew that middle school would be so demanding. Imagine what things will be like when he DOES go to Harvard. I'll try to come up with a hat. :)

  23. Those pants remind me of a pair I had in high school. They were the same color plaid, but more of a boot-cut shape. I remember wearing them with a black top with bright red lips on it, and thinking I was oh-so-cool. I love how you styled them with the slouchy sweater!

    1. Shea--When were you in high school? I've been trying to date these things. They're rayon and the brand makes me think they could be 70s. The top with red lips sounds like Prada! And you are still cool.

I find Ebay puzzling and unpredictable, and I have been selling for a while so I don't consider myself a novice. I still find it hard to know what will sell and at what price. Keep going though, there is money to be made when you get it right! xxxx

You do look very teeny. I am looking too thin these days, too, so I know it's not as easy as everyone says to me, "Eat a sandwich!" Look, peeps, a Klondike ice cream sandwich goes down the hatch every night. I'm working on it.

  37. Happy belated Plaidurday, Terri! Those pants are wonderful on you - not many can carry off this cut which to me speaks of the early '80's, but on your figure it works beautifully. I like the t-shirt and shazam-all-seeing-googly-eyes, the blouse, and of course the multi-plaid! They would be great with a black turtleneck and pendant necklace, and boots extending beneath the hem (or black socks / stockings with your oxfords). Perhaps they are already home?
